Big Sur: The disk “Macintosh HD - Data” can‘t be unlocked.

Hello everyone,


I recently got a new computer last month (refurbished) MacBook Pro 13.3 inches 2020 and I have updated the new Mac OS Big Sur on my computer. After it was completed, I signed into my MacBook Pro and I keep getting a message saying "The disk “Macintosh HD - Data” can‘t be unlocked."

Congratulations on your new Mac! We want everything to be working at its best, and are glad to help with this error message you see about "The disk “Macintosh HD - Data” can‘t be unlocked".


Before doing any troubleshooting, be sure that you have a backup for you Mac, so that your information will be safe.

How to back up your Mac - Official Apple Support


Once you have a backup, restart the Mac to macOS Recovery, and see what appears in Disk Utility.

You should see 2 volumes in the left sidebar: Macintosh HD, and Macintosh HD - Data.


Run Disk Utility First Aid on your Mac, following the instructions here: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support
