Pages -Numbering

I have a book which is numbered from 1 -182 in Pages. However, the numbers appear in the Bottom Right of each page. I wish to Centre the page numbers Bottom Centre of each page. I have been unsuccessful in obtaining a clear step by step process to do so and some answers in Google seem to miss steps or don't work. I have Pages version 10.3.5 (7029.5.5). The info I have seen refers to footers showing at bottom in 3 sections and how I should use the middle section. But, when working on my Doc. I cannot find this centre section even after deleting all the numbers. I then double click on the footer and insert numbers from page 1 but it stays on the Right of the footer on every page.

Frustrated for such a simple thing. Help !

Hi Schecter,

Step 1:

GO to theView menu and choose Show Layout.

This will make the three header boxes at the top of the page and the three footer boxes at the bottom of the page visible, outlined by thin (and pale) lines.

The image shows the Footer boxes inside the blue oval.

Step 2: Click in the middle box:

Step 3: Click the Insert Page Number marker that pops up, and choose the style of page number you want to insert.

Result:

For more information on Page numbering, Clck to open the Help menu, choose Pages Help, then enter "page numbers" in the search box.

Where did that document originate from? If you created that pages document with Pages '09 and later upgraded it to the current pages format you end up with what you see. That older pages format did not have the 3 column footer (or header as well). This older footer format is preserved when upgrading and the newer pages app can work with it but cannot created such a footer, it will create the 3 column footer for any new document. You should be able to select the footer paragraph and apply "center" to it. As I don't use anything above iWork '09 I cannot try it out though.

Hi marcus,

Good catch! I can confirm. When Pages '09 was still working on my Mac (before I updated to macOS Catalina) I saved a Pages '09 document, opened it in a later version of Pages, and Saved as Template. That template (in Template Chooser > My Templates) has survived all Pages updates. It opens in Pages 10.2 with single-field headers and footers.

Ian.
