iPhone 12 camera flicker on video recording

Hi!

I recently bought the new iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have noticed that when I shoot video's in the dark (with the lights on in the house), there is some kind of flickering visible in the video.

Apparently it is possible that due to very fast flickering of lights, slowmo video's make this kind of flickering visible when you can not see it with the naked eye.

I however have this problem with normal video's as well. I have compared it with the video's on my iPhone X and it is definitely worse in my iPhone 12 video's.

I noticed that this happens while recording video on HD (or 4K) at 60 FPS, if you switch to 30 FPS this doesn't happen.

Anyone else that has this problem?

Thanks!

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

As for the issue of light flickering, studying a little this whole issue I have been able to verify one thing.

This only happens to people who live in countries with PAL format (like Spain), where artificial light works with FPS multiples of 25. In many other places like the US it does not happen because they work with FPS multiples of 30.

I have downloaded the RCam app, which allows you to vary the FPS and I have been able to verify that in video recording with 30FPS and 60FPS this flickering of the light occurs when recording video, which does not happen if I set the recording to 25FPS or 50FPS.

I know Apple is going to introduce 25FPS recording and would ask if they can introduce 50FPS in the future for better and smoother recordings.

Setting the camera's FPS to 25FPS or 50FPS eliminates this problem. so... PROBLEM SOLVED!

Yep, is an issue on all iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. I have checked on all that devices and all of them have the flickering issue.

Each of those devices have a different camera on it, so it should be a software problem calibrating the famous exposure triangle.

Pls report it here https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html to make it heard and hopefully it becomes a priority for the future iOS update.

Hi! thanks for the reply :) i've just send a ticket bug with 3 example videos on https://feedbackassistant.apple.com/

Hope they answer me soon.

To see if it was a hardware problem i went to El Corte Inglés (famous spanish store) and tried that video testing on an iPhone 12 Mini, an iPhone 12, an iPhone 12 Pro and an iPhone 12 Pro Max and the flickering problem is present on those iPhone 12 phones so yep, it's obvious its a software problem and hope they fix it on iOS 14.3.

Hi All,

I have exactly the same issue and already chat with one of the apple support which advised me to book a time with their technician. So will go to apple store and check on Monday, 11th of Jan. I have a feeling that this is a hardware issue, which maybe i got a faulty products.

My wife have an exact same iPhone 12 Pro Max, just different colour. She bought the gold one and i use the graphite. But the difference is she doesn't have this issue. I took a video side by side on HD at 60 fps with exact camera settings, and it was significantly different where my phone had a flickering like a slow-mo video and her phone was completely fine.

Can't tell the different on normal day light, only at night with the lights on the house.

Kinda upset as I was using every iPhone since iPhone 4s and this is the first time I have an issue with the phone.

Cheers!

Hi Jos!

You are genius! That’s what actually happen. I didn’t know that there is a features for auto fps until you told me. So yea, on my wife’s iphone, it was set auto 30 fps, while on my iphone it was set to auto 30 & 60 fps. Both phones now works the same after i change it and make both on the same settings.

Thanks again mate, I will cancel my genius bar appointment since I found the answer here.

cheers! 🙂

I second that it’s a software problem, hardware is not the same on other models and they are having the same issues. It’s most certainly the dynamic tone mapping as someone else pointed out.

If it were me fixing this problem I would throttle how quickly the adjustments are made, something more gradual, because right now it’s too instant and behaves as a machine would. The human eye adjusts slower to those changes, no need for an iPhone to do it any faster, only comes across as overly processed.

Same problem here too (iphone 12 Pro, not max).

Flickering occurs only when lights are on. I am wondering if its a NTSC/PAL problem with video recording.

I have spent 2 hours with apple online support, and provided them recording examples etc yesterday. This sounded like an unfamiliar problem to them, and at the end of troubleshooting, it has been escalated up to the 'engineering team' who I am waiting for a response from.

I would suggest to get in touch with support, and reference this ticket, similar tickets and submit an example video as well to help build a case. Its pretty obvious its a software problem.
