iPhone 12 camera flicker on video recording

Hi!

I recently bought the new iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have noticed that when I shoot video's in the dark (with the lights on in the house), there is some kind of flickering visible in the video.

Apparently it is possible that due to very fast flickering of lights, slowmo video's make this kind of flickering visible when you can not see it with the naked eye.

I however have this problem with normal video's as well. I have compared it with the video's on my iPhone X and it is definitely worse in my iPhone 12 video's.

I noticed that this happens while recording video on HD (or 4K) at 60 FPS, if you switch to 30 FPS this doesn't happen.

Anyone else that has this problem?

Thanks!

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

As for the issue of light flickering, studying a little this whole issue I have been able to verify one thing.

This only happens to people who live in countries with PAL format (like Spain), where artificial light works with FPS multiples of 25. In many other places like the US it does not happen because they work with FPS multiples of 30.

I have downloaded the RCam app, which allows you to vary the FPS and I have been able to verify that in video recording with 30FPS and 60FPS this flickering of the light occurs when recording video, which does not happen if I set the recording to 25FPS or 50FPS.

I know Apple is going to introduce 25FPS recording and would ask if they can introduce 50FPS in the future for better and smoother recordings.

Setting the camera's FPS to 25FPS or 50FPS eliminates this problem. so... PROBLEM SOLVED!

I can confirm the below observations

1. The problem happens for me only at 60fps. Both 4K and 1080p

2. The problem doesn’t happen at any other frame rate at any resolution

3. My wife’s iPhone XS when switched to 60fps also shows the same symptoms

4. The problem only happens with artificial lighting, not daylight

Apparently this is very common and happens because the camera FPS and the artificial light flickering don’t match up (has something to do with the AC frequency).

This article below explains why this happens

I had this as well with the first 12 pro, they sent a replacement which was simlocked and told me I had to have my provider unlock it even though it was purchased directly from apple anyway took it back to the shop and they replaced again however even this new one has the flickering issue. My husband just got the mini and also has the same issue, it looks like these handsets are just poor quality

Hello, that's exactly what I mean, but in my case I bought it in an apple premium resseler and I'm within 14 days but they don't want to return the money or change the phone. Today I go to an apple store to see what solution they give me since it is quite exasperating to see these things on such an expensive phone with thousands of failures, even the screen with a black background on YouTube at 50% or less brightness, there are green flash flashing on the screen (must be seen in the dark to be noticed). I hope to get lucky..!

Hola!!

Well, I tested it today, and the same flicker was visible outdoors, in sunny daylight. Maybe I’ll post a clip tomorrow, so you don’t have to take my word for it ;)

There are some outdoor clips shot by other users experiencing this same problem, such as this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/iPhone12Pro/comments/jjitdr/iphone_12_pro_video_issues_any_idea_why_the_sky/

In my clip flickering occurs when panning horizontally. The outdoor clip by Reddit user is shot in portrait orientation, and flickering seems to occur when panning vertically. This probably has something to do with the way the sensor is scanned in the HW level.

I shot an outdoor clip in natural light to rule out any frequency issues with artifical light. HDR is disabled (even though it does not matter).

The problem is most visible in the sky, but if you look closely, it's also visible in other areas too.

I've put a high contrast version in the end to emphasize the issue. Those straight horizontal gradients don't look pretty.

Led lights flicker very fast. Faster than perceivable to the naked eye. Your iphone 12 camera is able to record in high speed and the frame rate of the camera is greater than the flicker rate of the led bulbs. The camera is working fine, its just picking up the led bulbs in your house going on and off very fast. . You can test this with an incandescent bulb and the slow mo setting on your camera. There will be no flicker. Same for natural sunlight as most have reported. Hope this helps!!!
