Printers under Big Sur

This printer driver problem with Big Sur appears to be a complete debacle. Does anyone have any knowledge of how/when it will be fixed? I am certainly not going to upgrade unless I can continue to use the new Brother printer I just bought two weeks ago.

If you bought it two weeks ago, it probably supports AirPrint, so you won't need to use Brother drivers. And most of the issues here concerning printer drivers are because of the HP certificate problem. (Yes, there are some Epson and Canon issues too.) Are you referring to a particular problem with Brother?

I am sorry you are having printer problems. If you will bear with me, I will offer some things to consider. Whenever we install an operating system upgrade or some OS updates, some printers and scanners will often stop working. Then a new OS compliant printer driver must be installed. Providing up to date printer drivers is the responsibility of your printer vendor and it is not Apple's fault if they fail to do so. Experience has shown that many printer manufacturers are very slow to provide updated drivers. Drivers for some older printers are never provided. (Apparently, they prefer to sell new printers.) What we can do is to thoroughly check the printer web site for an updated driver that works. If one is not available, then we should ask when one will be released. If that doesn't work, if the Printer has the Air Print feature, that can be used and no driver will be needed. If not, then you can check the web site below where volunteers write drivers for older printers which are no longer supported, but which work with newer operating systems. It is worth checking out. Good luck.

Incidentally, since you have Catalina installed on a back up drive you can print immediately by merely selecting that drive as the startup drive and using it for the time being. Problem solved.

Totally. Drivers are a thing of the past. It's been that way ever since AirPrint was introduced a decade ago.

I also wonder about the other functions of this printer (Brother HL-L2390DW). I am not at all assured that my printer will remain completely functional under Big Sur

As I wrote all of mine remain completely functional under Big Sur.

I have an HP 1020 Laserjet printer. Worked just fine in coordination with my Macbook Air Catalina and all previous OS X versions. After updating to Big Sur, I couldn't print anything. We had just recently had a power outage and thought my 20 year old HP had blown a chip or something. Went out and bought a Canon Maxify MB2720 inkjet printer. Got the Mac printer driver and it doesn't work either. I can ask the HP to print. On the computer screen, it says that the print job went through to the printer. When I watch the printer job (viewing the Macbook printer screen), nothing goes through. The printer roller activates - I can hear it, but nothing happens. This is the first time I have had such a bad problem with an Apple software product that I cannot troubleshoot. Does anyone know when Apple plans to fix this bug? I've read that it has already published an update for Big Sur.

I have Mac OS X Catalina backed up on an external hard drive and could go back to it, if I only knew how to completely delete the Big Sur OS until the Big Sur printer problem is resolved.

There have been other discussions about the Brother Label printers not working recently. Someone said that they are working on it. but not much else is available yet. It's a long shot, but you could check the link below and see if they have a driver that will work. It has a lot of drivers created by professionals who volunteer their time to write the software. They are mostly for older printers which the manufacturers no longer support.
