Deleted emails not appearing in bin - MacOS Big Sur

Hi

Since upgrading to MacOS Big Sur, deleted emails no not appear in the bin.

I have 2 mail accounts in Apple Mail. Prior to upgrading to Big Sur, deleted emails went into the bin.

Since upgrading, deleted emails seem to disappear.

There are a few emails in the bin, however they were deleted before upgrading to Big Sur.

I checked Mail Preferences > Account Behaviours and both mailboxes are set to move deleted items to the bin. But they don't.

How do I fix this - is it a known problem?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

We got the following advice from an Apple Support online chat and it worked for us. In Mail go to Favourites at the top of the sidebar, click the + sign in the circle and you should get a new window that says "Add Favourite". Use the drop down menu to add "All Bins" or "All Trash" (it may vary according to region). Click OK and this should solve the problem. All past and future deleted e-mails should now appear in this new folder.

Hi. I found that I can drag emails into the bin, and then they're fine. But that's a bit of a faff.

In the meantime, I have set up two smart mailboxes - one for each of my mail accounts.

I set each with 2 rules:

  1. Account = Account 1 or Account 2
  2. Message is in mailbox binAccount1 or bin Account 2.

I renamed the smart mailboxes as Bin Account 1 and Bin Account 2.

And this seems to be working fine :)

Once set up, any new deleted emails show up in the correct (and visible!) folder. That works for me for now.

I had a look online and could find the deleted email folders and deleted emails through Finder. But I wasn't 100% clear on how to remedy this. I think you can delete the envelope folders and get Mail to regenerate them. But that's for another day!

First up make sure the Favourites Bar is visible.

To the right of "Favourites" press the + icon. In the "Add Favourite" dialog box use arrow icon and select the folder/s you want. In my case, being in Australia, I selected both "All Rubbish" - deleted emails and "All Junk" - junk emails. When you do this they appear under favourites. If you have more than 1 account like I do they appear as sub folders.

PS Other members are saying to select "All Bins" - maybe this is USA?

So now I have All Inboxes, All Sent, All Junk, All Rubbish & All Drafts with sub folders.

Hope this helps. Stay safe everyone.

As far as I am aware the disappearing folders only happens with Big Sur. I had no problems with previous versions

You may like to try the solution I and others have suggested. That is click on the + symbol next to Favorites on the side bar. Then from the dialog box select folders you need.

As for your emails going to the trash you need to check your preferences: 1. see if you have any Rules that block senders. 2. look at Junk Mail settings and exempt filtering from your contacts.

Hope this helps.

I've since found that if you use "move to" and then select the bin, it does show in the bin afterwards.

But normally, this would just have needed deleting to end up in the bin, as opposed to moving it specifically to that folder.

Not too helpful, I know - but so far the only way I've found to make things "seem" like normal!

Until I saw this page, I'd assumed it had somehow defaulted to deleting items entirely, upon deleting.

Use a different mail program then.

I find Apple Mail search works much better than Outlook, apart from the glitch which is a simple fix.

I use Outlook for work on a corporate system and I prefer that for the features it has.

However, for home use I like Apple Mail despite its quirks.

If stuff doesn't work, then report it and or use other software. You don't have to use Apple Mail...

I don't think you will get any help with a general comment that Mail isn't working correctly and looking at settings won't help (which seems to be what you are saying).

To add:

The emails are going into the relevant Bin - mailbox 1 or mailbox 2. However, the bin folders are not visible in the Mail sidebar.

So, the question is probably:

How do I display the other bin folders in the Mail sidebar, please?

Deleted emails do go into the bin 1 or bin 2 because I find the emails using Mail Search. But I'd like to be able to see the bins, as I could before upgrading to Big Sur. Not sure if it makes any difference but both accounts are Pop email.

Thank you. Couldn't see an option to edit my original question.

Hi there, I have exactly the same thing happening since up-dating to Big Sur.

From reading your message above, I've just realised that I too can find them in mail by using the search - but clicking the bin in the side-bar, displays no messages at all.

I've no idea where those deleted items are actually stored though - as the bin just appears to be empty!

Did you find any method of making the bin act as it always did before?

I just can't seem to fathom this out!

Thank you.

If you get fully sorted, let me know! You can be the guinea pig ;)

The smart folders are fairly straightforward. You just need to select from the dropdown menus. (Click + to add another rule.)

I believe the smart mailboxes/folders only show what's held elsewhere and deleting doesn't delete them from their original location. But I haven't fully tested that. But just to note that deleting from the smart folder might not delete them permanently.
