iPhone 12 Pro Max touch screen not working

iPhone 12 Pro Max, unresponsive screen on my phone when it’s on a flat surface, it doesn’t respond to my thumb, cannot unlock it and it doesn’t work in certain apps. My other fingers seem to work fine. Once I hold the phone in my hands it works properly

Update: Originally my iPhone Pro Max was diagnosed with multitouch failure, and they replaced the screen free of charge (under warranty). The identical problem recurred a day later. I took it back to Genius Bar and they ran the diagnostics and it immediately failed Multitouch Feature AGAIN. Apparently, not all multitouch functionality is contained solely in the screen - there are some additional advanced motherboard integrations that may have failed in my case. At any rate, Apple replaced the entire phone and it works perfectly now. No problems. It's definitely not a software issue. I recommend bringing the phone in to Apple Genius Bar and having diagnostics run on it.

i had a similar issue I did a full factory reset and set up iPhone as new, did not restore from my back up and the issue was gone. I had to manually download my apps as it’s something to do with the back up. Something is corrupted. Very timeous step but if you get a new phone and restore from old back you will just be duplicating the issue

same problem developed for me about 4 months after getting the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. Certain keys on keyboard while texting would not work and I would hit an icon and it would think I touched some other icon, but this was only intermittent so I wasn’t sure if hardware or software failure. I took to Apple Store Genius Bar and they diagnosed multitouch screen failure and replaced the screen free of charge.

Not positive, but I believe 14.2.1 started my unresponsive screen issue. I first noticed it when unable to select specific dates in Google Calendar. Then just earlier this evening I struggled to type a simple text message. It seems the unresponsiveness for me is primarily towards the bottom of the screen. After a normal reboot the issue went away. My phone has been doing it while being help upright. 12 Pro Max with Otterbox Defender screen-less edition case

I feel you. It is annoying, especially with an expensive phone. The latest updated didn’t resolve the issue entirely. They replaced my phone and still the same. When I connect it to a charger, it works fine. I guess it’s something software related and electrical conductance. I can only reproduce the issue when the iPhone doesn’t touch my body and I try using it with sides of my fingers when the surface I touch the screen with is wider, i.e. works with top of my fingers just fine. Hope it makes sense what I just described

I had a similar issue which was so disappointing. did factory-reset myself, updated my phone, none of them worked then took my phone to Genius Bar.

They run the displace accuracy test two times.  My two tests were failed and the Genius Bar employees test weren't.

The diagnosis was that my fingernails were making contact with the screen and I've been advised to not use my nail!!!

My nails are short and  the second test was with my finger with the shortest nail that one person can have.

This is faulty and Apple should accept it instead of bringing these unreasonable excuses.

I got another appointment and will ask them to admit it's faulty because I want to return this phone.

Don’t give up. Call or chat with Apple support and immediately ask for upper tier support. Once I was able to work with an upper level tech, we resolved the problem easily. Wish I could remember how, but it involved accessing a mystery menu on my computer (phone has to be connected to computer) by holding down 3 keys, then resetting. Instantly, phone was working like usual. The tech said it was “just a hiccup, sometimes happens”. Was too relieved to take issue.

My sister in law's Pro Max was having the problem, and I thought it was the screen protector, so I kept it out for it. Then after the latest update 14.3, that's when I started having the problem. Cannot answer calls, swiping is broken up, etc...I thought it was the screen protector but after fiddling with the buttons that sometimes fixed the problem, I realized it's actually the phone.
