iPhone 12 pro max heating up

Does anyone know what is causing my iPhone 12 pro max to heat up. It has done this several times. Today it was really hot to touch.

My first 12 pro max only lasted a day because it was overheating like crazy. I thought it might have an issue like the old galaxy note batteries so I exchanged it the next day when the store opened up.

I didn’t have it on the charger, I wasn’t downloading/uploading anything, I wasn’t on 5G, I didn’t have multiple apps open. I was scrolling through an article on Safari for school with only text in it and after 5 minutes the middle to top part of the phone got extremely hot.

Don't worry if your phone gets what feels like hot to you; it will shut itself down if it gets too hot.

For the first 24-48 hours you set it up and after iOS releases the phone will use more battery than usual and will likely be warm as it resyncs itself with iCloud, if appropriate and rebuilds all the phone's internal databases so things like search work properly.

Beside the heat, I am having my device powering off already couple of times.

Crazy, before when I was using iphone 8 plus didn’t have anything like that.

The question is I upgrade or I downgrade the device. I understand because of the pandemic it was hard , but better to make a new phone after a year but in good condition.

thank you

I hope is gonna be a fix or a way to change the phone for the next one at the end of the year for a very very reduced price .

I’m not sure you read my post, Dogcow. I mentioned I wasn’t downloading anything. As in not downloading any updates, or back up files.

I was on stock iOS14.2. I wasn’t around wifi the first day, so I hadn’t updated it. I only use mobile data when using it for school work because I want a constant connection.

I didn’t have a need to back up this phone with a previous phones files. I have everything I need on an external hard drive. I started fresh with this one.

Perhaps I should have made my statement more clear in my previous post.

You had a nice guess though.
