Security update 2020-006 failed to install

After updating with the above described security update the restart of my Mac (Mid 2010 - High Sierra) failed. It ended up with a black screen and showing the cursor only. Manual restart does not install the security update.

Any suggestions?

Hi there Jacor,

We definitely understand your concern if your Mac is starting up to a black screen! It sounds like this issue started after installing a security update. We'd like to see how we can assist.

Have you tried starting up in safe mode yet? If not, check out this link for the steps: How to use safe mode on your Mac. This may help to complete the update.

If that doesn't help, try booting into macOS Recovery and then run First Aid on your startup disk. Here's how: Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

If the issue persists, let us know here.

Enjoy your day.

Mrs or Mr P. Phillips,

That worked!! THanks for your help.

I discovered though that when I need to restart the Mac is coming to a black screen with the cursor (whit arrow) and is not shutting down. I have to force the stop with the power button pressing a bit longer and the restart.

Normally I always use the sleeping mode so just discovered this problem around the updating.

If you have a suggestion for that issue I am much obliged.

Thanks in advance,

Jan

Am pleased this method resolved the installation of Security Update 2020-06 but sorry you are running into another issue. Suggest shutting down the computer by whatever works best. Startup and Immediately hold the Shift key. This is Safe Mode. It will do a Repair Disc and clear out chase files plus will load only the required extensions required to operate the computer. The Safe Mode will load very, very slowly - this is normal. Once it has loaded, let it run for 10 - 15 minutes. Then attempt to shutdown via the Apple Logo >> Shutdown.
