what is the difference between an apple TV 4K and HD?

The 4K has a more recent processor, outputs at a higher resolution (along with HDR) and supports Atmos. If one has HomePods then the 4K is the only one that supports Home Theatre mode, for setting them as default speakers and simulating surround/Atmos.
