Same here. After updating Safari to 14.0.1 I was unable to upload any files. Called Apple support on 11/16/2020. They had me on hold for 45 minutes. When they finally connected me with a technician, I was on the line with him for another 40 minutes and resolved nothing. He suggested that I install Chrome or Firefox. Unbelievable, Apple installs a crappy update, they can’t fix it, and their solution is to install someone else’s software.

I reinstalled the OS as had been suggested and that fixed the problem temporarily. I noticed it put Safari back to version 12. After the reinstall there were security and Safari updates. Once these were installed and Safari was taken up to version 14.0.1 it started failing again. So if you have reinstalled the OS to resolve the issue do not perform any updates or else it will fail again.

Confirmed

re-installing Mojave’s last version (10.14.6) puts you back to Safari 12.1.2

i can’t think of any mind blowing updates to Safari in 13 or 14 so I didn’t bother updating the browser - someone care to refresh my memory on what I might be missing out on?

everything that I noticed was broken before with Safari 14.0.1 was now functioning again with JUST the restore of Mojave

I have the same problem using 14 and Mojave. On another forum someone said you can still drag a file onto the attachment pane, so it's a problem with the actual paperclip functionality. No idea if he's right. I've switched to Chrome and can attach in the usual way. I'm done with Safari now.

This is the second Mojave update debacle in little over a month involving Safari 14. The last one wrecked my system and I had to do a clean installation. One mistake I can forgive, but now it's really time for someone to lose their job...

I might feel more charitable when I've cooled down. Have a good day.

Do NOT install Safari 14 if you intend to use Gmail.. It's not a bug. The reason for this happening is that Safari 14 stopped using Adobe Flash Player plug-in. Gmail site uses Adobe Flash Player for file upload, which means this feature will no longer work.

It's not even a bug - more like "we don't care about you, gmail + mac users" from Apple. Considering how big of a move this is, you might as well switch right now to Chrome because there is no easy solution to this. I don't see Gmail changing the whole file upload architecture to humor people using Gmail + Safari - unless there's a huge number of such people. But even if there are many of us, why would Google do this? It benefits Google actually - people will move to Chrome which supports Adobe Flash Player so that they can still use their mail, or rather will be forced to do so. So not doing anything by Google with this is a smart move. And Apple won't go back to using Adobe Flash just because of this either.

Check the Adobe announcement, point 8:

So yeah, bye bye Safari.

This isn't so black and white. I'm on Big Sur, Safari 14.0.1, and have no issues attaching files to Gmail. Both by paper-clip and dragging/dropping. It doesn't appear to be a Mojave issue, as a user I support is running Catalina and seeing the same issue. If this were a Flash version issue, all browsers would have the same issue, unless the browser security preferences reset after updating.

Yes, like many, same issue. Cannot attach files in gmail; cannot choose files to upload on Canvas, a course management site. Haven't tested other sites.

Mojave 10.14.6; system update or reinstall not feasible or practical.

I was able to drag-drop files into an open gmail to attach. That option is not available on many other websites, however. To attach files on many sites you must use the "choose file" button, which - Apple: Does. Not. Work.

I share your frustration. Just so you know: you won't have to reinstall apps. Everything returns just as you had it (all apps, the apps that load at startup, desktop wallpaper, etc.). I took me about 2.5 to reinstall Mojave — just a matter of restarting in recovery mode, choosing to reinstall, and letting the Mac do the rest. It's nothing like reinstalling Windows. :)

I have this issue too, with Safari 14.0.1 on Mojave 10.14.6 - no attachments possible, as the drop-down box doesn't appear. I logged into gmail using Firefox, and that worked fine. Irritating, to say the least, though manageable, I guess.

I don't intend to be on Mojave much longer; I've held off upgrading (if that's the word) because I've had a few 32 bit applications. I've now - finally - got rid of those 32 bit apps. Hopefully Catalina works OK!! I'm going to wait until Big Sur looks a bit more stable...
