Anyone elses Iphone 12 Pro max rear camera appearing black in the Camera App ? Also the flashlight has stopped working which makes me suspicious, front camera seems fine, it hasn't been dropped or anything and everything worked fine for a couple days until this afternoon. Wondering if I'm maybe missing some weird setting with the new camera features that is making everything black or disables the camera module ?

No one wanted to believe a brand new phone wasn’t working either, they all wanted to think it was user error, if you have a store close enough from wherever you bought it , I’d try to get it swapped for a new one asap. Over the phone they all tried to get me to send it in for repair under warranty. If you get on with AppleCare they can remotely run a hardware diagnostic to definitively test the rear module.

Yes, worked with apply support, they ran a diagnostic and could not read the camera, set me up with one of their preferred repair companies (London Drugs), took phone in and they replaced the camera for free, back in a few hours.
I just had this problem but with my iPhone 12 mini.. front and rear is blacked out... reboot does the trick and I hope it won’t occur again..
This started happening within two or three days of me getting the brand new iPhone 12 Pro Max ($1,400) . It’s probably happened 20 times. Yes. Restarting the phone fixes the problem so far. But it’s unacceptable that this is an issue at all with a brand new phone especially at this price. And of course it happens when I want to take an important picture or video.
UNACCEPTABLE PERIOD
Go through Apple Support on safari and login with your Apple ID then book a call back, they will try to fix it online through your WIFI. They tried to fix mine today and we finished with a full reinstall of my iPhone but it didn’t fix the problem. I’ve got another appointment with them on Friday and I’m hoping they will send me a new iPhone 12 Pro.
I sent my iPhone 12 Pro with its bust camera off to Apple Support and on the first day they received it I got this email back: "Our technicians have completed their diagnostics and will send you a replacement product. We’ll let you know when the replacement product is on its way"
Hopefully I will get it back tomorrow, its amazing how 'lacking' I feel without it, I wish id not sold my old one now, but Apple have worked amazingly quickly, probably as fast as physically possible.
Yup. I’ve had the problem since I got it in January. It started immediately. But yes. I can also open up my text messages and snap a picture through there and send it to myself. So far it always works again when I shir the phone off and turn it on again. But that really defeats the purpose when I need it urgently and I’m not expecting the failure. This is totally unacceptable.
Definitely get a broken camera replaced but don’t accept a used model as Norahgzz did.
two weeks ago Apple replaced my 12 pro with a brand new one and it’s working perfectly. I’m pretty sure that the problem was something to do with how hot the iPhone got when using the rear camera, the new one merely gets warm.
How old was your phone, did you have apple care, same thing is happening with mine, I’ve had it for 5 months, just happened last night, hope they are not going to charge me to fix, they ran a diagnostics and told me the same thing, rear camera faulty and not being registered, has affected my face recognition as well. thanks, Gail
Trash camera app. Then add camera back from Widget. Worked for me
No, I haven't. But since you have an issue, and we are only users, the best advice we can offer is to take it to Apple for evaluation and options.
iPhone 12 Pro is having the same problem with the back lenses but the 0.5 & 2x lenses do work in different camera modes.
-Video mode: Only 0.5x works
-Photo mode: none work
-Portrait mode: Only 2x works
Ive gone through all the fixes but nothing is working.
Also the camera app makes my iPhone very hot probably due to the Lidar, is it the same with all iPhone 12's????
This surely worked for me. Had issues with the app and deleted it later added it and it worked.
And what did Apple say when you took your phone and showed it to them? You have a full one year warranty on your phone. Use it.
I do pay for the additional insurance in case phone is damaged, etc! I’ll bring it into branch tomorrow. It’s just annoying how you have to wait in line outside and all these crazy restrictions now because of covid. Makes me hate going into these places haha
