Big Sur - External disc not mounting

Hi All,

I have a question. Just after the software upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur, my mac (Macbook Air 13-inch, Early 2015) stopped mounting any usb external discs. Doesn't matter, if it's an usb ssd card reader, usb stick, or external hdd. Does anyone have a similar problem, and any possible solution?

Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.0

Have you rebooted and tried again?

To solve this problem, I tried to scan/recover an external SSD with macOS' disk utility, but the utility ran into a kernel panic while checking the catalog file.

I’ve had the same problem with flash drives. I spent hours yesterday and another hour today on with Apple.

We ran through every type of fix mentioned here and more. I dug out and old iPad and lightening dongle out of curiosity, plugged in the flash and it worked! Bizarre thing is, after testing several on the iPad, they then worked with the usb c dongle on my MacBook.

The senior tech I worked with today documented all that and is escalating it up the chain. I did share this thread with him since it seemed new to all three techs I spoke with but isn’t a new issue. Only thing I can come up is that it’s somehow power related. No clue how or why at this point.
