Big Sur - External disc not mounting

Hi All,

I have a question. Just after the software upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur, my mac (Macbook Air 13-inch, Early 2015) stopped mounting any usb external discs. Doesn't matter, if it's an usb ssd card reader, usb stick, or external hdd. Does anyone have a similar problem, and any possible solution?

external drive not mounting I have an OWC minstack stx connected Thunderbolt 4 to a MacStudio M1 max and the 8 TB hard drive is not mounting The SSD mounts and operates normally. I've reinstalled Ventura and on the first boot the hard drive appears and operates normally but after a restart it dissappears again. very frustrating! It operated fine under Ventura 13.1. any hints? I can't figure out how to go back to 13.1 and Apple support says they don't support that

Big Sur Crashes when attaching external SSD to built-in USB port When attempting to attach an external SDD to a Mac mini (2018) running Big Sur (11.4), the operating crashes and restarts. Curiously, this doesn't happen every time. The disk has an APFS container with several volumes including an encrypted Time Machine backup volume. Has anyone had a similar experience and, if so, is there a workaround other than shutting down the computer before attaching the external drive? - Pie Lover

It's ridiculous. This should have been fixed without any of us having to be IT experts, which I am not!

Have you rebooted and tried again?

You can Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

Yep, I did, same situation. Apple advisor said that I probably have to wait for the software upgrade, with the new drivers etc., but it sounds a bit weird. I mean, if that was the case- I think everybody would have that problem, not just me...

I've done the NVRAM/PRAM reset as well, didn't help. I've done another one, control+alt+shift for 7 sec, then power with the prev.3 keys for another 7 sec- as advised by the Apple advisor, but that ain't help either.

Do you have any 3rd party drivers, such as Paragon NTFS installed?

That was my problem, despite downloading the latest version for sur, had to uninstall it and install "tuxera", so far so good, can see all my usb/ext hdds, read and write

See if these drivers are compatible with Big Sur. This may be a software compatibility issue.

Because Big Sur is a new system, many Developers have not updated their firmwares to work with the new system.
