Digital audio out

Is it possible to get digital audio out of a new M1 Mac mini through a USB-C port or by any other method? I'd like to hook the mini up to a 5.1 surround sound system. Cheers.

Per Apple's specs, the M1 Mac mini only supports multi-channel digital audio output via its HDMI 2.0 port.

Not exactly. The way I read it is that HDMI supports multichannel,

as it always had. 2018 spec is identical in that regard but pretty

much known that mast any DAC or USB audio interface works just fine.

Any other USB device that follows the USB Audio Device spec

should work fine and will likely be more app dependent (as usual).

You are absolutely correct. Didn't have my coffee this morning when I replied to the OP. Thanks for jumping in.
