Messages on Big Sur no longer getting/syncing SMS messages

Two part solution for me:

1) My Calls on Other Devices (Settings - Phone) was off as well. I have an old setup with separate Apple & iCloud Ids. I had to make sure FaceTime and Messages on both phone and laptop were all logged to the same account to be allowed to turn this setting back on.

After that, I still wasn't getting or able to send SMS on my laptop (M1-Big Sur).

Then, I found this on an Apple page

"On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding.*"

This let me choose the devices that received SMS texts. Turning it on for my laptop immediately resolved both sending and receiving issues.

Yeah had the same issue. I had to turn off iMessage and turn it back on. Then had to adjust the "Send&Receive" options back to my phone number and cloud account so I can respond properly from my MBP. After rebooting it synced everything properly.

Mine was switched on.... but it did get me checking other settings and I found a key one turned off (which actually makes more sense).

Settings -> Messages -> Text Message Forwarding. (and make sure your device is turned on - mine wasn't!).

Is text messaging forwarding still set up on the phone?

Thank you so much! This was my issue as well. Text forwarding was only selected for my old MBP & not my new one. Yeah - I'm so happy!!!

Same thing here - I have upgraded my iPad and MacBook Pro and these new devices weren't set to forward SMS to. Fixed that and all is now good.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

If you want to, you can send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner. Pick the closest topic you can find.

I hate this because the messages app synced no problem back when the imessages app wasn't an iOS port.

The app also doesn't run anymore on the background unless I open it on launch, I did tried reconnecting my apple account to it and that is the only way it syncs the messages received by the time I logged in there, the sync button doesn't do anything at all.

Same issue here. I checked text message forwarding and it was already turned on... tried turning it off and then back on and the issue still occurs. This definitely seems like a bug.

I am having similar problems. I am not getting messages on my MacBook Air from people not in my address books. Yes, I checked all the boxes. All the ios devices get all the messages, but not the MB Air.

I had the same problem and I contacted Apple Support directly on the phone. Turned out the the Setting on my phone had gotten changed. Might have happened when I last upgraded the phone. Who knows? These things sometimes happen with Apple upgrades. Anyway, it was in the Settings - Phone - Call on other devices and for some reason under "Allow Calls On" had changed and I changed it back and then my SMS began showing up again on my computer.

I have Big Sur as of a few days ago and i cant get my messages to send out to other cell phone users any longer from my computer. They come back Not Delivered! Whats the issue? Its really annoying when 1/2 the people I text are using android or other devices.

I am having the same issue. I just loaded a new MBP 16" from another MBP 16" that was working fine, service loaner purchase long story, I can't tell which MBP is the correct one on my phone for having the green slider on so I have both. Tried turning the sliders off and rebooting my phone then turning them back on and still no luck. If I send a text to android from my computer it says the message failed but it appears on my phone and gets sent bit the replies don't show up on my MBP. Not sure what to try next other than wait for another Big Sur update

I'm having this same issue, and none of the fixes are working. have done them all, signed in and out of iCloud, turned messages on and off, etc. everything. all things that need to be turned on are, but still not sending, all of a sudden after Big Sur update.

Same here - 2 months into the update Big Sur is having problems with delivering the very basics. But hey, I am sure it's much more important that we now have a green message icon instead of a blue one.
