Why 5120x1440 Doesn't Work with Apple M1

Hi

Why the resolution 5120x1440 Doesn't work with the New Apple M1 ...

You indicate on the website '' One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt and one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0 ''

But I can only use the resolution 3840 x 1080 not my native resolution 5120 x 1440.

Can I have a explication please ?

Thanks in advance

Hey all, my setup has the Samsung G9 with the M1 Mac Mini, and a desktop PC with an RTX2070. Watching some youtube vids, i made sure to buy a direct DisplayPort to USB-C cable that supported 1.4. I thought that would solve the issue, however, i still had to do some tinkering, although i think you'll still need a direct cable with DP 1.4 support for this to work.

Before playing around with the settings on the computers and the monitor, switching around and wake from sleep bugging out on the Mac Mini was really annoying. Even with the 1.4 direct DP > USB-C cable.

However, I think i've landed at a config that works, although this still requires the use of SwitchResX. Hopefully this will help some of you, there's a trial so you can try anyway.

G9 Monitor Settings:

Game: Refresh Rate > 120hz (240hz would bug out on wake from Mac)

Game: Adaptive Sync > off

System: DisplayPort Version > 1.4

Driver Version: 1008 (get from samsung site, requires a usb stick)

Mac Mini:

  • Used SwitchResX to set the display to 5k 120hz.
  • Setting Monitor to 240hz seems to bug out when i switch from PC > Mac, setting it to 120hz seems to not have this problem.

Mac OS: Big Sur 11.0.1

I found this on another forum and this worked for me:

holding down the options key when you are in Display settings on the Mac to see extra available resolutions. Some say they can do it with SwitchResX installed (or similar software).

I do not have SwitchResX or anything installed and this worked on my LG 49WL95C-W 49" monitor. I hope this helps.

Clearly there are still issues that Apple has yet to resolve, but that doesn't negate the fact that for some of us, 5120x1440@120hz is working perfectly fine through bootup, sleep, wake, and shutdown as expected. It all comes down to the combination of cable and monitor and settings on the monitor. Admittedly, I had issues early on, but once I got it working, it's been stable. The resolution is pixel perfect for 5120x1440, not zoomed in or out, jagged, fuzzy, or distorted. Using an AOC AGON 49 Super Ultrawide and the Cable Matters USB-C to DP adapter + DP cable. I'm running SwitchResX because it helped before MacOS was updated and I just never uninstalled it.

I also received my m1 mini today. My monitor is Samsung Odyssey G9 (49 inch 5120x1444). Using one TB to DP cable. I get same result as the others. If switch the monitor to DisplayPort 1.2, set the refresh rate to 60 and use the options key to get the extra resolution I get a 5120x1440 (low resolution) that visually seems just fine (native resolution) with proper font sizing. Of course it would be nice at 120 or 244 but it does work with only a cable an no extra software or dock which I like.

If I switch the monitor to 120 it starts to glitch the screen and turn it on and off by itself so forget that for now.

As for dual monitor (turn the G9 into two 2560x1440... one DP and one HDMI) it works as good as it can... @ 60 refresh rate which is what the monitor forces when using Picture by Picture mode. So Mac is flawless there. This will probably the mode I use when working as I need to share a screen most of the time and this will allow me to slide stuff on the sharing monitor (Ms Teams).

Citrix has a M1 specific Receiver now... so that worked.

I did get some glitchy Bluetooth with my mxmaster mouse so I worked around the crappy apple bluetooth by using a Logitech USB dongle for the mouse and now it works fine now.

For my use case I am fully functional (with one or two monitor mode)... I assume things will get better with updates. So its a keeper.

I kind of agree with Fyas but at the same time I want a Mac ... with Apple Silicon... now.

I was able to get 5120x1440x120hz with SwitchResX on the Mini but still had a few (lots) issues with waking from sleep or shutdown.

So this morning I picked up a Caldigit TS3 and MacBook Pro M1 from the local Apple Store.

The TS3 seems (up to now) to solve all the sleep and shutdown issues. An SwitchResX 4.11 beta also works great.

So right now the MacBoook is single cabled to the TS3, the TS3 is single cabled DisplayPort to the G9 and everything works like I want. I need the TS3 anyways because I have a ******** of geeky stuff to plug in.

Of course it's the third time I come here and claim to a have winning combo so I will let that simmer a couple of days. If it still works I will order a third MacBook Pro M1 (with the specs and keyboard I want) and return the Mini and MacBook that I have right now at the end of the Xmas return period (jan8th). TS3 stays whatever I choose.

Second choice is to keep the Mini and the TS3 (seems to work also).

This cable gives me 120hz @5120x1440 with no issues. Have to use it on DP1.2. It does not work with DP1.4 setting.

I was finally able to get full 5120 x 1440 and solved the monitor not waking up after going to sleep. I tried the Cable Matters Display Port DisplayPort to USB-Cable and the adapter. However, the one that I found to work the best was the Maxonar DisplayPort to USB-C cable from Amazon.

To get full 5120 x 1440, I changed the DP settings from 1.4 to 1.2 on the 49" CRG9 monitor. Also under System Preferences on the mac there is hidden display option. System Preferences -> Displays-> Press and hold the Option key on the keyboard (that will bring up Detect Displays -> Click Detect Displays.

(M1 Mac Mini 8gb/1TB —> Samsung CRG9 49” via Maxonar TB3-DP cable)

Yes gave up and purchased/use SwitchResX with near complete resolution of most issues:

What remains is if i have connected my PS4 to HDMI port on CRG9, then waking up from screen being off is at times wonky (had to disconnect HDMI to have DP recognize Mac again).

Haven’t had any Bluetooth issues (so far). -a new MX Master 3 for Mac. Very smooth! with a usb connected old apple keyboard
