Why 5120x1440 Doesn't Work with Apple M1

Hi

Why the resolution 5120x1440 Doesn't work with the New Apple M1 ...

You indicate on the website '' One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt and one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0 ''

But I can only use the resolution 3840 x 1080 not my native resolution 5120 x 1440.

Can I have a explication please ?

Thanks in advance

1. SOLVED:

First thanks to this thread. I found a lot of information.
SETUP: Machine: Mac Mini M1 (Spec'ed out) / Monitor: 49" Samsung CRG9 / Cable: Maxonar 8K 60Hz Type-C to DP Cable 10FT/ Software: SwitchResX / MacOS Version:1. 11.1
2. The machine will come out of sleep, reboot, and run 5120x 1440 at 120hz

Everything is working just amazing and it looks and feels amazing. I'm hoping I can possibly remove the SwitchResX in the future, but to be honest it solved a problem I had with doing remote meetings and NOT being able to share my screen (because the resolution is too high, and SwitchResX allows me to do that on the fly).

Again, thank you to everyone who posted their hours of trial and error!

It's not solved. I have the same setup and it worked perfect for about 2 days, then it was monitor wakeup issues every time and the monitor would randomly disconnect even without putting the machine asleep. At best, SwitchResX + an 8k usbc to dp cable is a finicky solution. What did end up working for me with consistently is using the CaliDigit TS3 Plus dock, but having to spend another $220 is a real hassle.

Agreed. Same here it works fine for me. Only "issue" if you want call it so, is that the Monitor wakes up late during a reboot or boot. Wakes up when already reached the desktop. No big deal I'm not keen to see the loading bar. On the other hand no issues when waking up from sleep, no diconnects or whatsoever. Although I have to use Switchresx, without it I get only Low Res Picture (running 120Hz)

Yeah I'm in the same boat of only getting switchResX to work along with that 8k usb to dp cable. Recently ordered a CaliDigit TS3 Plus dock and hoping this works as it seems to have worked for you. kinda sucks (disappointing they don't let you say s u c k s ) that I had to freaking spend $220 to get my two high end products to ******* talk to one another on a frequent and consistent basis, but if that's what it takes then fine... its a business expense anyways, but its still not ideal.

When showing low resolution modes (not HiDPI) in the Displays preferences panel, the native resolution (5120x1440 in your case) usually does not have the " (low resolution)" suffix even though it is not a HiDPI mode.

The 5120x1440 can't exist as a HiDPI mode unless your GPU supports a 10240x2880 scaled mode. Some GPUs can support scaled modes beyond 8K for displays that use two DisplayPort signals, such as the LG UltraFine 5K or Dell UP2715K.

I am running an LG 49WL95C-W with a 2017 MBP and get full resolution (5120x1440 @ 60HZ) via type-c only. I have been looking at the M1 Mini but came across this thread and obviously have concerns digging through all the posts.

Can anyone confirm successful resolution not needing SwitchResX and using single clean setup via type-c?

Hi guys,
This problem still exists, but the solution is quite simple.
1- Go to SystemPreferences - Displays.
2- For the Resolution options let it be on Default for display.
3- Hold the option key while selecting Scaled.
Done. You should be able to see all supported resolutions.
Merry Christmas!

That's not a solution for most of us. I don't see 5120x1440 as an option in that menu, and even with SwitchResX there's tons of wake up issues from sleep and random disconnects even with actively using the monitor. Mac mini 16gb + Samsung g9

I've got 5120x1440 @ 120HZ working out of the box with a Cable Matters USB-C to DP adapter + Cable Matters 8K DP cable that I've linked on the first page or two. This is with an AOC AGON 49" ultrawide.

I haven't seen anyone with a Samsung G9 succeed out of the box and everyone I know with an AOC AGON is working fine, so depending on if your LG is more like the Samsung or the AOC is going to determine your success.

I finally got it working... although I have been other threads with M1 getting update soon, on this monitor you need to change the on the Monitor->Quick press the main button (bottom right) to bring mani menu-> Toggle Up-> Select "Menu"-> Select "System" -> Select "DisplayPort Ver." and change it to "1.2" - its usually on 1.4 (1.1 only goes to 4k).. hopefully with the update (next Mac OS update maybe 11.11? 11.2?) the newer 1.4 version will be supported, this is just a software / driver issue. See screenshot attached with M1 Mac using 5K. Note: I switched back and forward between my Intel Mac and my new M1 to get the setting changed over but once set, it stays
