Well, there is a variation on pauclaude's suggestion that definitely worked for me (details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252056512?answerId=255286668022#255286668022) but it left my mac in a state where both SIP and SSV had to be left off, otherwise it would not boot. So if the outline pauclaude posted, or some tweak to it, would work (where csrutil is re-enabled at the end), that would definitely be of interest/value. Hopefully someone will try and let us know their outcome (and whether it persists across a couple of successful reboots, in particular).

I am trying to change the screen prior to login - the Big Sur screen when you boot up. That's the screen that irritates me.

This only works with a single user setup. Sigh.

Yes when I determined the image I wanted to use, I renamed it and put it into the folder.

The presented “solution” is only such for Single-User systems, Made-In-Italy.

Hence, it poses no solution for Multi-User systems (such as yours and mine).

Apple doesn't read these forms as they community based so I would submit a feedback request and hopefully it will get a address in a future update for Big Sur.

As I said I followed all of the steps as posted.

Fault Vault is off, as mentioned in on the step by step guide.

Mac has 2 Users, I also stated that. There are no Guest Users.

Repeat the process with the wallpaper you'd like to show up

Unfortunately no one has found the solution to change it for multiple users. If I come across something on Reddit or forums I’ll update here.

Soren, Alas, I can't use the workaround, as it requires disabling File Vault, which my University IT forbids. I will remain a victim of Obnoxious Orange for a few more months.

The instructions say to turn FileVault off, but it doesn't say turn it back on. Some users have said that they have run into problems with the FileVault off. Should it be turned back on?

This procdeure changes litteraly only the "login" screen, isn't? I mean, you still have the big sur wallpaper every time you switch on the machine, right? (For login screen i mean the one you see when you logout from your account)
