Solution for changing Big Sur login wallpaper to custom.

I just started looking at this and I can't get past step 3 - Right click on user in left column > Advanced Options..... I don't see any Advanced Options anywhere on the Users & Groups window. Where have I gone wrong?

I assume you entered your admin password to unlock permissions for Users & Groups and that your account is an Admin?

If you right click your user name under Current user list you should see this.

That did help, but when I got further on, there was already a folder in the library with the name I had copied from the Users & Groups! I tried to follow the rest of the steps anyway and only ended up changing the desktop for my own user area :(

Yes. It would be great.

However, no one, here, has figured that out, yet.

There is a third-party utility, that has been mentioned, around here, that people are hoping will provide the solution.

(I haven’t tried that software, yet.)

About Me:

• I have 2 user accounts. 1 admin and 1 standard
• I disabled file-vault
• I have automatic log-in on my 'standard' account aka bypasses the login screen automatically
• I have fast-user switching 'ENABLED'*
• @Ive46 [another user] stated they tried Onyx method and it did not work so I thanked them and clicked 'helpful'
• I did not not actually try it myself as I saw no reason to if the rainbow screen still remains.
• I only actually see the screen for a very short time while 'fast switching' so its tolerable but i do see how this could this is incredibly annoying for most users otherwise we would'nt be 22 pages deep into this thread lol.

Yes, vetuslusor, you are correct about more general “fixes”.

(Of course, you, undoubtedly, wrote the parenthetical, «the startup wallpaper is no doubt critical for the system», with tongue firmly planted in your cheek!)

hi everyone running bigSur update on MBP 2016 15inch, i actually didn’t have to do any of the above changes it was working fine but however from today evening suddenly when turning on the machine the ugly bigsur wallpapers pops up at the login screen and not the dekstop wallpaper and then i tried all the steps mentioned but none of it works please help 😓

Thank you for getting back to me.

I went through all of these steps, and restarted the computer and the wallpaper was the one I wanted. But the next day, after I had the computer turned off for the night, the Apple wallpaper was back. I repeated the steps once again, and the same thing happened.

I will give it one more try, to be sure I didn't miss anything you suggest.

I wish Apple would change this in an up date to Big Sur. Give the user the option of choosing the Lock Screen user background instead of the hideous colorful red blue orange yellow art image. I would much rather it be a landscape image.

Wonderful solution...thank you...after several tries without success, turning FileVault "off" (which I had forgotten to do) turned out to be the key...now everything works smoothly and the bright colorful screen is history. Thanks!!!

I have only one picture in the UUID folder: my desktop picture!

I added the one Apple was advertising - alas! - the Big Sur with, it doesn't work.

Maybe Apple should take the time and effort to answer here, they are messing up.

Turns out the OP solution is temporary. Does anyone know how to remove protections in order to change the actual file that macOS keeps pulling from. It’s in the System Library then Desktop Pictures folder.

Have you located the particular desktop image if that is not the one? It is as simple as changing one file if that one file is what system is using for the image, is it not?

Terminal window could be used up until Catalina. I’m fairly confident there is a way to change the system file.

after installing clean my mac and cleaning files suddenly the lock screen is changed to its default state, i repeated the steps but nothing works how to overcome this! what i cleaned was cache files and few others to make the mac FASTER!

This did not work for me on an older MBP. I set all permissions on folders, waited 2 hours for File Vault to decrypt. Still didn't work. (Then I got a nasty note from my enterprise IT that I was out of compliance w/ their security regulations, had to recrypt.) Looking for another solution.
