Solution for changing Big Sur login wallpaper to custom.

Within 24 hours of disabling File Vault, I rec'd an auto-rebuke from IT saying I was out of compliance. They (large, "prestigious," Silicon Valley private U) must have surveillance demons running 24/7

I believe the Monterrey graphic is an «impressionistic representation of the» underwater «geography of Monterrey».

(The way it was presented at WWDC helped give me that impression.)

I don’t mind the BS image or the forthcoming Monterey one as OPTIONS, but making them an unchangeable default (without annoying and insecure work-arounds) Login Screen/Lock Screen background is just NOT cool!

I agree that built-in, secure means for changing the Login Screen background should be provided by Apple. (The Lock Screen background usually seems to properly change with the individual user’s choice of Background.)

However, no amount of discussion, here, will be able to change anything along such lines.

The only recourse is to provide Apple direct Feedback, through their designated mechanisms, such as Product Feedback - Apple.

A kelp forest isn't a field of "distracting details." The fronds lend themselves to an impressionistic representation that would make a nice login screen, e.g., from this image (from the Farallon islands, just north of Monterrey)

Yes. One could, most certainly, create «an impressionistic representation» of a «kelp forest», but such would not, necessarily, be a reasonable «impressionistic representation» of Monterrey, per se (even according to your own choice of image).

Since it is Apple’s choice of name—even as a location—it is Apple’s choice of what «impressionistic representation» they wish to use.

In any case, the underwater canyon view, they appear to have chosen, is, arguably, far cleaner—fewer lines—than any including a «kelp forest».

If you want anything different, then the only recourse is to provide Apple direct Feedback, through their designated mechanisms, such as Product Feedback - Apple.

Display name and password for a single user does not show that eye boggling colour. I have a photo of my own choosing both as log in and as desk top as a single user. Where it needs a swerve to get round it is multiple users on the same Mac. Took me a while to figure that it pertained to multiple users. Don't understand why Apple made it so that it is so difficult to get rid it - its so annoying. You have no idea the relief of getting rid of it. Not only that its like Apple removing our freedom of choice on a Mac we bought and paid for.

We have been seeing cases of Single User systems where, using “Display login window as: Name and password” always displays the Big Sur Graphic image («that eye boggling colour», as you put it). Yet, once changed to “Display login window as: List of Users”, that would be skipped for the Lock Screen.

However, I’m not certain that that has remained the case with the most recent updates.
