iPhone email "No password provided" error

Suddenly cannot get email on my iphone with iOS 14.2. I get the message that there is no password provided. I have rebooted the phone. I have gone to settings and re-entered my password for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Am jstill getting the same message that there is no password provided.

For all of those with ATT accounts, I had to get a 'secure mail key from ATT and use it during the email account setup process where it asked for password. Overall, it was a very frustrating process and I was shocked when it finally started working. It really should not be this confusing. I did the following.


1. Got the secure mail key by logging into ATT account and going to profile and requesting the key.

2. Deleted existing yahoo/att email account from iPhone

3. Adding the new 'other' email account using the steps is the article, https://www.serversettings.email/att.net-email-server-settings-imap.php#iphone

*** use email key where it asks for password


Thank you to all that posted some information on the topic because there does not appear to be a 100% clear answer for all situations.

I had exactly same issue. What worked for me is DELETING THE ACCOUNT and Recreating it. Then it downloaded all emails.

I do get emails on my Windows lap and the Iphone. I had no problem with Windows laptop getting the emails. So some of the solutions mentioned - talk to your email provider, check if their server is NOT down etc -- made no sense as the problem is NOT with the source but the Iphone itself. For some reason IPhone refuses to recognize or read the password it already has in the password field. Recreating the account solved the issue.

I had this same problem today with two of my email accounts in the native Mail app on my new iPad. The Apple support representative and I did some googling, and I saw the comments here about certificate errors. This reminded her of a solution, so what we did was to go to the settings for Date and Time under General and turn off Set Automatically. We then manually re-selected the correct time zone, and this resolved the issue. She said that sometimes having the date and time set automatically can cause conflicts with certificates. Hope this helps! :)

Had this same problem upon upgrade to ios 15. The problem is Apple's fault 100% on this. Typically when you set up an account, the ios mail app auto-discovers the appropriate method of password authentication with the email server. For whatever reason, the password authentication on my ios device defaulted to "password" rather than the "MD5 Challenge" that is set up on the email server. It was wrong on both the incoming and outgoing. These settings can be found in the ios Mail settings page, for incoming look under "Advanced" and then under "Authentication" select your servers appropriate method. This setting is also under the SMTP server setting (next to Advanced). Note incoming and outgoing authentication methods may be different. If you don't know what your authentication method is, you can try to see if you have a spouse or co-worker who uses the same email server and look at their authentication settings. Good luck!

I ran into this issue and none of the fixes I found here or elsewhere online solved it. Multiple times deleting and adding account, restarting and/or resetting phone - no help.


What solved my problem in the end was changing the password.


After all my fails, I got the idea that iOS might be choking on the password itself, which contained a wide range of symbols, including "\" and "<". I changed my password to an all number and letter sequence, and bingo - it worked.


I hope this helps someone else avoid the hours I ended up spending on this.

Ok, so after reading and reading and considering everything, even stupid theories about yourself not knowing your own password, thanks for the suggestion, I finally cracked the mistery (in my case) and solve the problem, it was just that apple requires that the username must be exactly the same that you have in your provider data, in my case it was the whole email address, I wrote the exact username and now is working, at least for me.

There is a very long and boring document from Apple where they compile all the possible causes of this error.

Well, Apple doesn’t care whether you enter your full email address or just your username. Apple doesn’t even look at that field. It’s your carrier that requires or doesn’t require your full email address. I have 8 email accounts; some require the full email address, others only want the username, and will reject the full email address.

It is not at Apple’s end. Who is the email provider? Many email providers, if they require 2 factor authentication, require an application-specific password when using an email client that doesn’t support 2 factor authentication. Examples of such companies are AOL, Yahoo, gmail, AT&T, BTInternet, and any providers that any of these host.

The problem is with Iphone only. The same email account works with my windows laptop and desktop. When I deleted the account and recreated with the same password it worked and imported ALL my emails. This happened only with one of my AOL accounts. The second account was working fine. For some reason the Iphone was not reading the password field. This is a technical problem only Apple service can solve.

Deleting the account (for about the 10th time) and using the AT&T Secure Mail Key I've had for some time, instead of my password, to set up my mail account on my iPhone X, just worked. Thank you. However, I have to say that I had previously tried using the SMK and it didn't work. Today it did and my ATT email populated with several hundred emails (all of which I had previously seen on my laptop). But, now my phone is good to go again.
