iPhone email "No password provided" error

Suddenly cannot get email on my iphone with iOS 14.2. I get the message that there is no password provided. I have rebooted the phone. I have gone to settings and re-entered my password for the incoming and outgoing mail servers. Am jstill getting the same message that there is no password provided.

For all of those with ATT accounts, I had to get a 'secure mail key from ATT and use it during the email account setup process where it asked for password. Overall, it was a very frustrating process and I was shocked when it finally started working. It really should not be this confusing. I did the following.

1. Got the secure mail key by logging into ATT account and going to profile and requesting the key.

2. Deleted existing yahoo/att email account from iPhone

3. Adding the new 'other' email account using the steps is the article, https://www.serversettings.email/att.net-email-server-settings-imap.php#iphone

*** use email key where it asks for password

Thank you to all that posted some information on the topic because there does not appear to be a 100% clear answer for all situations.

I had this problem on an iphone 11 running 14.6. It started with receiving but not being able to send mail from my comcast email account. When I reset my password to fix this problem, i got the "no password provided" error, Tried many of the solutions listed in this thread and they did not work for me. Then I read about someone having a problem like this from a password compromised due to a data breach. I think maybe some ISP's have blacklisted compromised email/PW combinations, even old ones or similar ones. I reset my password (again) to something far outside my usual PW patterns and magically everything works again

This has nothing to do with your iPhone, it is an issue with your email account provider. For example, if you have 2 factor authentication set up on your email account you will need to create an app-specific password to use it with your iPhone’s built in email app. Your provider may also have a security key that is required to set up an email client. But is not an iPhone problem, regardless of the details of how to resolve it. Contact your email provider or review their FAQ for iPhones.

Re-entering the password worked for me, but I had to close and reopen the mail app before it would take hold. Also, only update the password, don't change any other settings... I didn't get any confirmation from the settings or the app that it had worked, the mail just came through... 24 hours later and mail is still arriving, so fingers crossed it keeps working.

Thank you so much OkeeKen! I had this issue for about a month now and neither AT&T or Sprint/T-Mobile were able to help!

I followed your instructions to the Tee and it finally got resolved. I had to create a secure mail key first and use it in place of my password on the IMAP and SMTP passwords slots and the rest is history!

Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,

Mr. L. Rodriguez

What worked for me - uninstall the ios Mail app. Then reinstall the Mail app from the App Store. I tried everything previously - deleted account, added account, rebooted, etc and nothing worked. Finally just uninstalled the Mail app and reinstalled (with email account still on phone) and it immediately started working again.

Just remember to turn mail back on for the account as it will turn it off when the Mail app is deleted. Hope this helps.

The moderator is sending you to a page with various Apple-centric email issue solutions. I’m betting that you’re an ATT/Yahoo client. If I were on my laptop instead of my phone I’d link you to the solution. The easiest solution involves getting a key code from ATT to use instead of your password. Googling ATT email key code may take you right to where you need to be.

  1. delete the account
  2. RESTART your phone
  3. Add the account back.

The restart is needed so the mail app forgets the old settings for the account.

If that still doesn’t resolve the problem consult the help pages for the account provider. There are likely additional security requirements for the account. In particular AOL, Yahoo, AT&T and accounts associated with them recently added enhanced security requirements. Other posts in this thread have useful advice on how to deal with these changes.

Thank you. I managed to get the email working to a point. Unfortunately, my iPhone will only set up the account using POP and not IMAP. Very frustrating.

When “New Account” screen is on (one when you’re prompt to enter name, email, password, description) access Control Centre and put your iPhone offline (enable Airplane mode and turn off WiFi). Then enter account credentials, tap ‘Next’ in upper-right; on next screen you’ll see an option to choose between IMAP and POP - that is when you can put your device online again via Control Centre.

Good luck.
