AOL mail error

My aol email account will not retrieve new emails. It’s says “Cannot get mail. No password provided for emailaddress@aol.com” please go to mail account settings and enter a password. I’ve done that several times on my iPhone and iPad. Also reset network settings. Both are updated to new iOS. Deleted aol mail from accounts on iPad first and now I cannot add it back in mail accounts. Still not working on iPhone. See attached photo for the pop up I keep getting.

I did some research for you. AOL is now requiring App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password. This is part of their security measure. So, How does one create an App Specific password to enter for AOL email account(s)? See below:

If you've activated 2-step verification for your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.

1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.

2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.

3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.

4. Follow the instructions below the password.

- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.

5. Click Done.

6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

Two-factor Authentication is not on my AOL account either. And I do not use the AOL App on my iphone 11 either. I use it as my main email too. But I tried the instructions from Axel anyway. I signed into AOL on my computer and under "Account Security", at the very bottom, is "Generate App password". Click on that and you will have the option to select "iPhone email". It will generate a password. Enter that password (without spaces) in your iphone where you normally enter your email password. I was surprised, but IT WORKED! Thank you Axel!

This was very helpful. It worked for my Mac and iPhone and solved the problem. You need a code/password for each. Enter special code/password when asked to enter your email password. It works. AOL saves the code on the website security page. Also for iPhone- go to settings- mail- accounts - choose account with issue- put in special code where you current password is entered. It works.

Thanks for this! I can't seem to get rid of my old Cheese Grader Mac Pro (until Apple comes out with some similar thats NOT 5K) ... my mail broke on Jan 19, 2022....have not been about to get it working until now.

The KEY for me, was setting up 2F. Just using a App specific password did not work...but once I turned on 2 Factor and generated a new password, it worked like a charm. Thanks again!

AOL is a preset option in the Apple Mail app in IOS and iPadOS. Once you enter your full AOL email address to set the account up, then all you need to enter is your app-specific password. The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) should therefore be preset and work as is. I would recommend that you ensure that the copy/pasting of the app specific password is done correctly.

Good Morning,

Wanted to advise that I FINALLY was able to add my AOL email to the mail app on my iPhone. What I ended up having to do was to backup my iPhone, without the mail app, then I reset it to the factory settings. Before I restored the phone from the backup, just as a test, I tried to add the AOL email info to the mail app on the freshly restored factory settings and it worked. I then restored the phone from the backup, downloaded the mail app that I had deleted before the backup, entered the info and FINALLY it works. Thanks for the guidance, I was at my wits end.

Best,

Sarah

So , I got a notice on my Mac that my password could not be verified on my Verizon.net account. (Now run bye AOL) password could not be verified.

I was receiving but could not send from this account (my business account). So I tried keychain to retrieve my password and tried entering that then switched my port back and forth. * Finally I signed onto the AOL portal and it asked me to give permission to use the account for mail which I did after reading it. Suddenly my account switched from POP to IMAP and everything worked again. I did have to disable the previous version or I would have had duplicate inboxes and could not reply from the old one.

** ONE Problem though. It sent me every email from when I opened the account in 2007 as new !!!! I just went back to the computer and kept hitting mark all messages as read in the mailbox drop down menu up top every 20 minutes.

PROBLEM FIXED....

PS. I never tried just changing from POP to IMAP ..... So try that first just in case.....

Hope your 2022 is a good one....
