My aol email account will not retrieve new emails. It’s says “Cannot get mail. No password provided for emailaddress@aol.com” please go to mail account settings and enter a password. I’ve done that several times on my iPhone and iPad. Also reset network settings. Both are updated to new iOS. Deleted aol mail from accounts on iPad first and now I cannot add it back in mail accounts. Still not working on iPhone. See attached photo for the pop up I keep getting.

I did some research for you. AOL is now requiring App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password. This is part of their security measure. So, How does one create an App Specific password to enter for AOL email account(s)? See below:
If you've activated 2-step verification for your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.
1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.
2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
4. Follow the instructions below the password.
- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.
5. Click Done.
6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I had the same problem with emails on an iPhone 11 recently and followed Alex’s instructions with one exception. I had to include the spaces in the computer/generated password to get it to work.
Your main and original password to the AOL Mail Website will always be the same that you had set in the past. The app-specific password is used for all other apps. You do not have to remember the new app-specific password(s) because they will be different for every app. If you need it again for another app then you generate another one like you did this time. No need to remember it.

Create an App-Specific password for your iPad. Each device must have an App-Specific Password. Follow the guidelines in my "Solved" response on above. Once the App-Specific Password is created then you can use that on your iPad.

You have to go back into AOL and generate a new password just for the iPad. Follow the same procedure. I had to generate a separate one for each device. Just the first time. After that they all work great.
Had same issue. What worked great for me on iphone and iPad was to go in settings under mail and locate my aol account and delete it. So scary as that’s where my notes are - have tons. Added back in the aol account without even leaving settings and presto, back in business including all my notes
On my iphone the settings doesnt allow me to use the generated password, it will only take my main password. I have used the generated password for my PC so i know it works. Just the iphone doesnt allow for any other password. It literally opens up the website to input Aols credentials.
It appears that you are able to log in to the AOL Mail Website without issues. It also appears that you are able to generate the app-specific password from the AOL Website.
Do you have the AOL account already setup in the Apple Mail app? if YES then all you should need to do is paste that app-specific password in along with your AOL email address as your username.

Interesting regarding the VPN comment. I turned my VPN off and it let me add the account back in and also get mail. Just one data point but it will be interesting to see if the problem recurs. I had never gotten the rate limited message before but yesterday I switched to a different VPN than the one I had been using.
Just wanted to confirm that you generated two passwords correct? Each password will have to be generated by logging into each AOL account separately and then entered respectively.

Try using a computer to log in Aol.com. Generate an App Specific password while on the computer and then enter that into the respective Mail app.

The purpose here is to have a new specific password for each device. As you have learned, you can only generate this password with your originally defined password. This works best with 2 factor authentication activated with AOL. If your original user-defined password gets compromised then it will still be difficult or nearly impossible for someone else to access your email account.

This worked perfectly. I would only add that when the password is generated, there are spaces between the letters. Don't include the spaces and it will work.
