Just one more thing, marcworld. I goofed when I said the native Mac scanner software didn't work fully with the ND1000 after installing both the latest driver and the Neat Scan Utility. It does work properly.

The "combine into single document" option appears if you select PDF as the scan format. I tested this after I wrote my previous comment by scanning a two-sided color document and saving it as a single document. It worked just fine. Good luck getting yours up and running.

As an aside, the Mac app PDFScanner also works with the ND1000 on Big Sur. When I first installed it, it wouldn't connect to the ND1000. But on a hunch, I opened the Neat Scan Utility and verified that it connected with the scanner normally. I closed the Neat Scan Utility and the reopened PDFScanner. This time it did connect with the ND1000 and worked perfectly. I don't know if I'll have to do that each time I want to use PDFScanner, but I don't really think so. But even if I do, it's a simple work around.

Bottom line: I have confirmed on both my 2018 15" MBP and my 2015 21.5" iMac that the Neat ND1000 will work under Big Sur with the Neat Scan Utility, the native Apple scanner software, and the Mac app PDFScanner. You just have to install the latest Neat scanner driver and the Neat Scan Utility to make that happen.

After going through all the motions in this thread, I hit on a solution that has worked consistently for me (with emphasis on "for me").

  • Download and install the latest NEAT SCAN UTILITY from the NEAT web site in your APPLICATIONS folder.
  • After installation and before opening the (now legacy) NEAT program, double click on NEAT SCAN UTILITY in your application folder.
  • Open and scan in the NEAT program.

This process has not failed (YET!)

Hello marcworld. I just tried the MarcoNJ's suggestion on my 2018 15" MBP running Big Sur 11.2.1. It worked for me. Obviously, I had to use a USB to USB-C adapter to connect the ND1000 to my MBP, but that was to be expected.

I did notice that I seemed to have to insert the document a little further into the scanner than I remember doing before, but the scanner captured the entire image with no extra at the bottom. I tested it with a single-side black & white doc and then again with a double-sided color doc. They all scanned normally. I did the tests using the Neat Scan Utility, not the Neat app that appears directly above it in the Apps list. I did not open or test the Neat app itself.

I was also able to add the ND1000 to my MPB by going to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and then clicking on the "+" button. Curiously, it appears as "Near ADF Scanner." (Note: it calls it a "Near" scanner, not a "Neat" scanner. Probably just a typo on whatever line in the software the name is listed.) Anyway, the Apple scanning software does work with the ND1000, but I could not get it scan to double-sided even though I selected "Duplex."

I note that your scanner is an NM1000, whereas mine is an ND1000. They use the same driver, but I have no idea what differences there may be between the two models. Maybe some arcane difference is causing you problems specific to that model.

Anyway, good luck. I hope you get everything resolved the way you want it.

If Neat does not provide the compatible scanner support for Big Sur, and/or you choose not to participate in a subscription relationship, then your choices are use the scanner and software on a prior version of macOS where it is supported, or find another scanner solution that works on Big Sur with vendor support, or by means of VueScan Professional without requiriing the scanner vendor drivers.

I have two possible solutions for you. Apple's Image Scan software works with most scanners. It is not full featured, though. Try it out and see if it works. Or you can download and try the VueScan app for free to see if it works. It works with most scanners and is fully Big Sur compliant. There is a reasonable one time fee for it. It is full featured. I purchased it and recommend it. (I have no association with VueScan.)

Yeah, since upgrading to Big Sur, my Neat scanner NM-1000 is useless.

The Neat website doesn't mention Big Sur and for prior versions of MacOS like Mojave and Catalina, they needed to release "legacy" driver updates / posted special pages for these MacOS versions. Nothing yet for Big Sur.

Specifically, the problem my Neat scanner is having is

1 - it doesn't recognize that a page has been inserted up against the roller with that usual twitch of the roller mechanism.

2 - the Apple imaging utility (aka Neat Mobile Scanner) does let you start a scan, but the roller never stops after the page has exited the scanner, and there is no image ever deposited into the relevant folder.

Also - stay away from VueScan - I already tried this based on advice here, and that app is useless too, it does not recognize the Neat scanner at all. Just says that no scanner was found on your system. And it's a clunky old app anyway.

I left a support SOS on the Neat site at https://support.neat.com/scanning. Who knows if they'll reply. I'll update here if I have any success. I'm thinking it may just be time to buy a new mini scanner though. Every single MacOS update it's a new hassle with this thing and I resent Neat's attempts to revise their hardware business into document cloud storage and then pretend like my scanner just shouldn't exist anymore, unless I cough up some subscription fee. Certainly not worth it - money better spent on a new scanner.

I completely agree with you, Neat is by far the worse company, I've reached out to them numerous times and all they care about is charging a monthly fee (which in my opinion is outrageous). This is the only utility that I found that works with the Mac although after scanning you have to save it to a folder and describe each and every document you've scanned.

Sorry to come across as hijacking this thread, but my frustration level is screaming and NEAT is easily one of the worst companies for helping anyone.

Can I get the Mobile Scanner Driver from any of you? It is no longer installed with their latest Driver Install which I believe is 4.0.1. No idea why. Without that driver the mobile scanner will not work.

Even more frustrating is the original installer disc, which I still have, never contained ANY Mac install software.
