Apple Cinema Display 30’’ with M1 Apple Silicon Mac

Hello,

I am wondering if someone has already connected successfully the old but still wonderful Apple Cinema Display in its native resolution (2560x1600) to one of the new Apple Silicon M1 computer through USB-C link ?

I am interested in buying the brand new M1 ship Apple Mac Mini.

I remember that a solution had been found for the Mac Mini 2018 Intel based line through the USB-c link.

Thanks for your feedback !

I have 30” Cinema Display and a 2018 MacBook Pro connected to it via a Henge dock and I can use the full resolution. However when I unplug the pro and plug in my m1 MacBook Air I do not get the full resolution. I haven’t spent any more time of on it than that brief try so I’m unsure if the MacBook Air can drive this screen.

Update: I didn’t see the comment about the option key to see the full list of resolutions so I tried this an it works!

To be clear: I have this Stone - USB-C Multi-Port Desktop Hub for MacBook - Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet Port, Power Supply, 3 USB Ports, USB-C Port, SD Card, and Headphone/Speaker Connections https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076W7GVFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_.sG-FbH6WMSNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

and it’s plugged into the original cable and power brick that came with the screen.

hope this help!

Thanks Pmiles,

Can you confirm me that you are still waiting an answer from UpTabs regarding the display of our Current Topic ?

I talk about the Cinema Display 30" that uses the DVI-Dual Ling to Mini DisplayPort for its 2560x1600 resolution.

I hope it will be possible to use a second adaptator (Mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter for the video and audio and a USB to USB-C adapter for the USB ports connectivity) as you mentionned for the 27" MiniDisplayport model (A1316).

Hi Folks,

Thanks Rafb for your feedback !

I have few more questions :

  • does it means that once you have scaled the resolution to its native 2560x1600 you do not have to rescale it after a reboot of the computer ?
  • Are the buttons on the right edge side of the Cinema Display still functionnal :
    • The power On/Off of the screen which is able to make asleep / awoken the computer,
    • The 2 buttons to increase / decrease the brightness of the screen ?
  • Are the keyboard buttons regarding the brightness of the screen still functionnal ?

Thanks for your answer :-)

Purchased a Cinema Display 30" including a Dual DVI port. It works fine with my mid 2011 MacMini on the DisplayPort. But not in conjunction with a Thunderbolt three (USB-C) to Thunderbolt two adapter from Apple on my brandnew MacBook Pro M1. I must admit I' very disappointed.

Tried it with a USB-C to Mini Display -port; didn't work either.

Any suggestions as to what will work?

I would like to use 2 screens. I have a new 4k LG screen and the Apple 30" Cinema Display, which i have got working via a DIVX to USB-C link- but I can only connect one at a time. The other cannot be seen when I hit 'detect displays' . I have tried restarting with both connected, with each one connected then plugging the other in; no luck as yet.

How can I get both screens simultaneously working on the M1Mac Mini?

cheers, Gair Dunlop

Well...This seems to be very good News!......Now, another question....I have the Apple 30" Cinema display.....And, also the apple 23" Cinema Display.......both happily running as dual displays on my 2008 MacPro tower.......I'm getting delivery of a M1 Mac-mini in 2 Days......to replace said Mac tower which, finally, is not updatable by Apple, actually long-gone from Apple support of any kind.....New Apple towers are the cost of a new car....or two.......Sooo....anyone have any ideas about any possible way to run TWO cinema displays using the The OWC solution, or two??? My thanks to all who have been laboring on this Thread...Cheers!!....

Has anyone been lucky with the brightness controls?

I really hope they haven't removed the support from the kernel extensions (already happened in the past, see the link below...)

Can someone try to connect the CD30" dual DVI to an intel mac and check i the brighess controls are working?

Hi Rafb

Thanks for sharing on how to get the 30'' Apple Cinema HD Display to work on the Mac Mini M1.

I'm getting my Mac Mini M1 in a few weeks from now and i also have the 30'' Apple Cinema HD Display but what i'm wondering about is...

How do you get the other cables from the 30'' display to work, the Firewire and the USB.

Are there some connectors for these as well ?

I both use Firewire and USB so it would be great if you got a solution for this too :-).

Thank you.

Hi 850cc,

Thanks for sharing your solutions!

Sad to see that 'Apple geniuses' have become 'Apple idiots'. :-/ anyway...

It seems again from the specs of the adaptors that work, the common trait for it to work is Usb-c alt mode.

Just to be clear some questions to your solutions:

- Are you using the first 2 adaptors you present (usb- c to mini DP) in combination with the Apple mini displayport to dual link-DVI adaptor?

- Do you face the 'sleep issue' only with the first adapter you mention?

-what is the image quality on the 3rd (club 3d) adapter? Any other issues with this one??? Slep issue? I would consider buying it if no issues.

Looking forward to your reply.
