Apple Cinema Display 30’’ with M1 Apple Silicon Mac

Hello,

I am wondering if someone has already connected successfully the old but still wonderful Apple Cinema Display in its native resolution (2560x1600) to one of the new Apple Silicon M1 computer through USB-C link ?

I am interested in buying the brand new M1 ship Apple Mac Mini.

I remember that a solution had been found for the Mac Mini 2018 Intel based line through the USB-c link.

Thanks for your feedback !

Regards

I have 30” Cinema Display and a 2018 MacBook Pro connected to it via a Henge dock and I can use the full resolution. However when I unplug the pro and plug in my m1 MacBook Air I do not get the full resolution. I haven’t spent any more time of on it than that brief try so I’m unsure if the MacBook Air can drive this screen.

Update: I didn’t see the comment about the option key to see the full list of resolutions so I tried this an it works!

To be clear: I have this Stone - USB-C Multi-Port Desktop Hub for MacBook - Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet Port, Power Supply, 3 USB Ports, USB-C Port, SD Card, and Headphone/Speaker Connections https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076W7GVFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_.sG-FbH6WMSNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

and it’s plugged into the original cable and power brick that came with the screen.

hope this help!

Hi Vincent, I was replying to ratephi in particular. Just want to get the information out there for other's trying the olde Apple Displays.

I haven't seen any success stories with the DVI version of the display. Yes it does sound like they managed to get a DVI version to work on the 2018 Mac mini by chaining two adapters together, but unfortunately no success stories on the M1 that I am aware of.

Right now it appears to be the Mini DisplayPort conversion that may not be supported on the M1s. If you find a report of another manufacturer's Mini DisplayPort display successfully connecting via a USB-C adapter, then we will know that it isn't technically impossible under the right conditions.

Hello Steve,

Thanks for your comments, but your Cinema Display is the Thunderbolt model, which has been mentionned compliant from Apple technical M1 specs.

This topic is dealing with the Apple Cinema Display 30" which requires adaptators to link its DVI-Dual connector to the USB-C/Thunder3 of the M1 Mac.

We are waiting for a reply from UPTAB that sells an adaptor USBC/Th3 => MiniDisplayPort to be connected to the second Apple Adaptator : MiniDisplayPort => DVI Dual Link of the ACD 30" display.

Regards.

I have the new M1 13" MacBook Pro and the original 30" Apple Cinema Display. I have purchased and tried (and subsequently returned) both uptab adapters (linked here), as well as the Club 3D CAC-1510-A USB C to Dual Link DVI-D Adapter HDCP Off for Apple Cinema Displays (linked here) and none of these work with the original Apple Cinema Display. I haven't found anything to be effective.

If anyone discovers a working set up, I'd love to know.

MacMini 2019 (Intel)- Thought I'd share this though my mini is not an M1.

Just bought an Apple Cinema 30" display that came with the original dual link adapter:

https://www.apple.com/sg_smb_5200/shop/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter

along with the original 150W power source.

Purchased this on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HLPKGCT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The adaptor worked like a charm!

Update!! I got my Apple CinemaDisplay30 minidisplay version working like a charm with the MacMini M1!! YES!! FINALLY!!

At first, I got a resolution only at 1280 x 800, and blamed the dualdvi adapter. But after some research on the internet, I found that you have to hold the "option" key when changing the resolution to see alternative resolutions, and BAAM there we have 2560x1600.

What you need:

  1. Apple DualDvi adapter: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mini-Displayport-to-Dual-Link-DVI-Adapter-A1306-E32/284060675984?hash=item422355ef90:g:dQQAAOSwDnpfmhh6

I have not given up yet. The best set up for the MacBook Pro 13" M1 is OWC Thunderbolt 3 dock with mini display plug.

A CHOETECH Model Hub-M06 USB-C to Mini DisplayPort +PD Adapter works but can blur from time to time and you have to option click to secure full resolution.

I have both screens working on my MacPro 2013 with two (lots of external hard drives) Thunderbolt docks connected, then a Thunderbolt 3 to TB 2 connection without any problem. I unplug that and one 30" ACD works on the MacBook M1 and one on the MacPro at the same time. But so far M1 runs only one. Will try a few more set ups before I give up. Just have to take some more time, but not looking good at the moment.

I’ve just thought of an idea to get two of these displays working at max res - I’ve bought a cheap ($10) “displaylink” powered USB 3 dock with a dual link DVI DL port on it. I think display link items are essentially a usb graphics card in themselves and the one I have bought supports the max res of the 30” Cinema Display. So, taking inspiration from a few YouTube videos about connecting multiple displays to the M1, im hoping for the best and will let you know if I manage it!

I have seen confirmed reports that the Thunderbolt Display works with the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. I would have expected Thunderbolt displays to be supported because they aren't that old and most Thunderbolt ports support older Thunderbolt versions.

There hasn't been any reports of a Mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter working... with a Mini DisplayPort monitor. These people know what their display is because they have them running on an earlier Mac with the very adapters in question. They just don't work on the M1. So it's not just a case of using the wrong type of adapter, they have the right type, it just isn't working.

Which is why we are looking for some sort of confirmation that someone has successfully USED a Mini DisplayPort to USB-C adapter with a Mini DisplayPort display.

The monitor did not display despite the power being on and the adaptor being plugged into a powered hub. Those adaptors I mentioned had all been listed on various forums as possible options. So I ordered them all and tested each. They didn't provide a solution to use the M1 MacBook with the original 30" Apple Cinema Display Monitor.

My chain was using the M1 MacBook to the Mokin 9-in-1 powered USB-C hub adaptor to the the Apple Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor to the original 30" Apple Cinema Display, and the monitor display didn't work. I also tried to use all the adaptors in a chain from monitor directly to the MacBook (bypassing the powered usb-c hub) and that didn't work either. I was not using the dual link adapter other posters have mentioned, but I've ordered one and I'm hoping that might change my luck. I'll report back in a week when it arrives

The FireWire connection is just to enable the FireWire ports at the back of the display. Brightness is controlled via USB.

Correct, on the MacPro detaching the USB, the brightness control stops working.

Is the display's USB plug connected to the computer? You can use the USB port on the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

Yes USB connected and USB keyboard & mouse connected to Cinema Display are working but not the controls.

Also I can see the display in the USB section of About this mac as: Apple Cinema HD Display Id: 0x9221

Maybe they removed the support in BigSur? 🤔

Also in display preferences there's no Brightness slider. Very strange
