Apple Cinema Display 30’’ with M1 Apple Silicon Mac

Hello,

I am wondering if someone has already connected successfully the old but still wonderful Apple Cinema Display in its native resolution (2560x1600) to one of the new Apple Silicon M1 computer through USB-C link ?

I am interested in buying the brand new M1 ship Apple Mac Mini.

I remember that a solution had been found for the Mac Mini 2018 Intel based line through the USB-c link.

Thanks for your feedback !

Regards

I have 30” Cinema Display and a 2018 MacBook Pro connected to it via a Henge dock and I can use the full resolution. However when I unplug the pro and plug in my m1 MacBook Air I do not get the full resolution. I haven’t spent any more time of on it than that brief try so I’m unsure if the MacBook Air can drive this screen.

Update: I didn’t see the comment about the option key to see the full list of resolutions so I tried this an it works!

To be clear: I have this Stone - USB-C Multi-Port Desktop Hub for MacBook - Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet Port, Power Supply, 3 USB Ports, USB-C Port, SD Card, and Headphone/Speaker Connections https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076W7GVFY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_.sG-FbH6WMSNX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

and it’s plugged into the original cable and power brick that came with the screen.

hope this help!

This one will work with Mac or PC, I have connected one 30" ACD to my 13" MacPro M1, while connecting this dock https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/docks/owc-thunderbolt-3-dock to my 2013 Mac Pro to two 30" ACD. (Apple thunderbolt 2 to TB 3 adapter). Also connected one ACD with Choetech USB-c to Mini DisplayPort + PD Adapter Model HUB-M06. (will be putting it on eBay since the hub works. Charger on it is 60W. Have a second open box owc-thunderbolt 3 on the way to test two a once on the M1.

  • By the way the above setup can switch my set up from to 2 displays on the 2013 MacPro to one, while running the second on the M1. Kinda of neat, but end game is two on the M1 PB

Apple loves to mark their stuff obsolete so that they no longer have to support it.

I've been with Apple since the eighties. It wasn’t always like this. But then again Apple almost went bankrupt before Steve Jobs came back.

Apple has figured out how to lease equipment without actually saying that they at leasing you the equipment. You know when your lease is up because your device will no longer run the newer operating system that newer software needs.

the main reason I just upgraded from my 2011 17” MacBook to the MacBook Air M1 was due to needing to run some newer software. Keeping my old Mscbook to run some 32bit programs.

But OMG this MacBook Air M1 is one nice super fast machine and as I have it connected to my old 30” Apple display I don’t mind that it has a small display. It put my old 17 inch MacBook to shame.

I apologize in advance if the answer to my q is somewhere buried in this long thread. I have my Apple Cinema Display 30" connected to my MacBookAir 2020 M1 using a Club 3d brand USB-C to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable (https://www.amazon.com/CAC-1510-Adapter-Displays-3840x2160-2560x1600/dp/B08B7FSVTL/ref=asc_df_B08B7FSVTL/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459728334703&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2390013022828269888&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9052941&hvtargid=pla-946946059435&psc=1).

Questions:

1) Are people connecting to the ACD 30" with displayPort and if so, how, as mine has only a DVI cable?

2) Has anyone figured out how to get the laptop to "remember" both the full resolution and the screen arrangement? Often and randomly, when I close the lid on my laptop, and later reopen it, the ACD resolution has gone back to 1280 x 800 and the arrangement of screens is forgotten, defaulting to side by side.

Thanks in advance for any guidance/illumination!

Hi,

I have the old Cinema HD 30" with dual DVI. I bought the original apple adapter to get the Mini DP output. Then I bought a Mini DP to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. It worked great with an Apple MacBook Pro 2017. HOWEVER now with my new MacBook Air M1 I only get a very poor display resolution...that is not worth using. So as you I am looking for a new solution. Some help please!

Apple Cinema Display 30’’ with M1 Apple Silicon Mac, and 2020 M1 Silicon Mac, Wikipedia says "Due to the high resolution (2560×1600), the 30-inch model requires a graphics card that supports dual-link DVI" Apple sales tells me I may use an Apple HDMI to DVI Adapter, which is female DVI receiver (adaptor) which has a male HDMI that one may plug into the HDMI port on the Mac mini mi. The same monitor has a USB plug which Apple says may be left out and also monitor has a firewire plug that may be put into the firewire port on the Mac mini. M1. And they state the Apple Cinema Display 30" will work.

The enclosed diagram shows the cord connection from the 30" Apple Cinema Display manual connected to a G-4 Mac tower

Hope this will work. Just ordered the adaptor cord. https://www.apple.com/shop/mac/accessories/power-cables?page=1&f=singlelinkdvi&fh=4595%2B43ec

Gaol is to get Mac Mini M1 to work with 30inch Apple Cinema Display
