Desktop files affecting system performance?

Does having a large number of files on the desktop affect system performance? Will moving the desktop files to another folder (i.e. Documents) speed up the Mac?

A long, long time ago, in an OS far, far away, it did.

Supposedly, that is not a problem any longer. But, I don't use my Desktop for storage (it's always hidden behind open windows), so I can't provide any working knowledge of that issue.

Maybe look in Activity Monitor and see what is using lots of CPU%. It may be something else causing the performance problems you are seeing.
