iphone 12 pro video switches to slow motion

I was recording video for a project on a 12 pro and my 4 minute video became 13+ minutes long. I’ve used an 11 pro for the same task and thought I was crazy. Second time I did a recording it again starts out fine and then approximately one minute into the video it plays in slow motion. It seems to change the file format as when I air drop a perfectly fine video from the 11 pro it does the same as with the original 12 pro recording. Has anyone seen this issue?

I have been experiencing this for a while on my Phone Pro Max 11. When I airdrop from my phone to Apple TV or Mac Pro late 2013 desktop, or to iPad Air 3 latest generation, the video clips become 10 times slower. I.e., a 41 seconds video becomes 4.1 min long, not only on the device to which it has been transferred, but ALSO on iPhone (the original video has become slow motion). It is like the act of transferring activates some type of slow motion feature.

So I checked the video: on iPhone I opened a video that I had already transferred with the results described, then clicked Edit (top right). Below the video clip there was a series of vertical bars, the central ones being more far apart than the ones at the sides. This indicates that portion is in slow motion, basically almost the entire clip. The bars will show only if the video is in slow motion. You can adjust to regular speed by moving the bars together and save the video. However, when I resend the video after this adjustment, all happens again! The video will convert back to slow motion in iPhone and transferred copy is in slow motion.

So, I found it is better to correct in Quicktime by opening the clip in the download folder (where it is transferred when airdropping to my MAC), pulling together the bars (Quicktime will show them as well during playtime) to eliminate the slow motion, than saving the clip in a folder/location of choice. All worked nice until in the destination folder above the saved video clips an image icon with the same name of the clip appeared, with extension AAE (i.e. IMG_0786.MOV and IMG_0786.AAE).

When I opened the AAE file my iPhone library pops up for a sec, then a white screen with written on top "Import", and just below "Import to: Library" with Library being in a scroll down.

Well, once I opened that AAE file, the trick of eliminating the slow motion in QT and saving under a different name (or same name to different folder) no longer worked. The saved file is still 10 times longer.

I have been in talks with Apple support and they will reach out. They suspect something related to Quicktime player.

Apologies if my description is confusing.

Weird! In this case I have no solution for the 12 Pro iPhone.

It seems both Lucas and you have the same problem (slow motion = longer movies)) in original recordings played directly in iPhone 12. Lucas also said he experiences slow motion in airdropped movies from iPhone 11 Pro, just like I did with the iPhone Pro MAX.

I was archiving photos and videos taken at a couple of conferences, no interest in having them stored in iCloud. So I transferred some from iPad to an external Sandisk SSD. When I played a video to make sure the transfer was ok I noticed the longer length and slow motion. I deleted all the transferred videos in the SSD. Edited the original videos still on the ipad (or phone) to eliminate the slow motion, and transferred them again. Same problem, even if I airdrop it to my MAC to an iPad (or phone). However, airdropping one of the videos that I had not yet transferred onto the SSD was flawless when I airdropped it in between my devices (NOT the SSD). It felt like the original iphone/ipad video transferred onto the SSD were left with some sort of mark, and were no longer the true original copy.

Hence I decided to duplicate each of the remaining videos before airdropping and storing in the SSD, and this worked! A bit of a convolute process but I have now secured all the 100s of video clips in my external storage.

For the first few videos left with the "mark", the solution is to transfer it, correct the slow motion via Edit in the final device, and save it. It will be saved along a AAE file.

I have no clue what is the reason for this faulty direct transfer.

Apple Care is useless, unless you crack your phone screen, I guess. They claim that they tried to reach me by phone and claim the line was busy (it was not). Did the same a few months ago. Also, the claim is associated with my mac pro, and not iphone 11 pro max. I do not know what possessed them to do so, other than the consideration that I have no longer apple care on my MAC. An excuse to let me be?!

Hi there LucasRLong,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like videos played from your Photos app on the iPhone 12 play normally for 1 minute and then play in slow motion. We see that you've even tried the recordings from another device. Try restarting your iPhone using these steps: Restart your iPhone.

If the issue continues, reach out to Apple directly here: Get Support.

Have a great night!

I've only watched on my phone, so I don't think it would be related to quick time?

Do phone's use quick time? Mine is a brand new iPhone 12 and disappointing to hear that you've been in talks for some time and they will reach out. That doesn't seem like much movement towards resolution!

I wonder if we have faulty devices, I haven't seen any other complaints about this.

I did use the editing tip and it worked but its not a good solution if the change recurs as it did for you!

I actually reached out today! Before I contacted for other reason, hoping that a cable that let me connect iphone to MAC late 2013 would get rid of the issue. I only briefly describe the problem to explain why I needed the cable. Since it is quite a task to connect a recent iphone to an older MAC, I made a point of describing the issues today.

I would think that iphone video still play via quicktime even if the app does not tell.

I hope they will post an answer. If they do not, I will keep you updates once I hear from them. Cheers!
