Now it says the file error and is asking me to choose Startup disk ??? It just keeps spinning ? Has a note saying click to restart computer in target disk mode? Have no idea what that is

This happened to me, i found out later that it was because i allowed the mac to update...but didn’t have enough storage for the update. So my mac was stuck in between a update but kept failing the update and not letting me log in. So they told me to restart in target disk mode, i think what this does is...it allows you to save your files/doc onto another computer and then you can delete things on the mac to make storage to continue the update. Now onto how i actually fixed mine.... i shut down the mac when the option was available and as soon as i pressed the power off button, i next pressed Command and R at the same time, this took me to recovery mode. I had to delete storage from the mac since i did not have another laptop at disposable so i sadly had to restart my entire mac and clear everything. Once I did that i had enough space for the update, and then was given the option to re-download MacOS Sur. Sorry for the long post hope it does help anyone, since apple was kind enough not to help me
I'm a little confused about the purpose of this forum. It looks like users post problems but solutions are never provided. Is there a different site that is monitored by Apple support where solutions are provided?

Bottom line: Before you attempt an upgrade, be certain you have plenty of disk space available.
My MacBook is doing the same thing like dragonfly6411. I don’t want to target mode because I only have one computer. Also, I was told to hold down CMD R when I restart it and then go to the Disk Utility and go and do the First Aid well it’s asking for me to put in the password for the Macintosh HD before it can run and it’s not taking my password. I don’t know how to reset it or anything. I need my computer to work. Please help.

Nope nothing. Iv been stuck on this screen for the last few days since attempting to update. What does it take for someone from apple to actually reply with a solution?

I am having the same issue with a 2018 MacBook Pro. The download was working smoothly until it said there was an error. Now it is prompting me to do a restart using Target Disk Mode.
Having the exact same issue on the exact same screen here! What a shambles - scared about not being able to work on Monday morning! Please do reply if you find a fix!
