That would be correct behavior. When you tap the volume button it would silence the ringer. Unless you are referring to some other sound. Also, if you look at the phone, the ringer volume will automatically reduce since the camera recognizes that you are paying attention to the device. There is a way to turn that off, but the ringer stopping when you touch the volume control is normal behavior.

As soon as I touch the side button to increase the sound it goes silent. I have both a pro and a regular 12, just took delivery and both are doing the same thing.
Not sure if it is relevant but both were upgraded from a iPhone 10 and were not set up as new iphones but migrated. As soon as I touch the side button to increase the volume it goes silent.
Please explain a little more clearly what you mean. What button are you pressing? Does the ringer quit, or does the volume just get lower?
