Use of USB stick with new iPad Air

Just bought the new iPad Air 4 gen and was told I would be able to transfer data and photos with a USB c stick to it.

My Mac Air has a USB c port and works fine with any USB stick.

Connected a USB c stick to the iPad nothing happened.

According to Apple it should work.

Something is not correct.

What to do?
