Mac Mini (M1) dual display doesn't work.

I'm enjoying my Mac mini with the M1 soc but unfortunately connecting two monitors does not work. Upon fresh boot, both monitors display correctly on login screen. However, when logging in, both monitors start flickering (see video). I have to disconnect and reconnect one hdmi cable for displays to work again. I currently have one one monitor connected through the HDMI port; the second monitor is connected with a USB-C to HDMI adapter. I should clarify that both monitors work perfectly on their own; the issues come when both are connected. Any ideas?

I've liked a video of flickering. The apps are non-responsive when flickering is occurring.

I have two Samsung QLED 28" monitors - connected them both to the M1 Mac mini and experienced the same problem on start up - persistent flickering. One monitor is connected via an HDMI to HDMI cable - the other connected via an HDMI - USB-C cable. If I disconnected the HDMI - HDMI monitor - the mini would boot normally i.e. the HDMI - USB-C was the only one connected on boot. If I then proceeded to connect the HDMI - HDMI monitor after boot - both monitors worked correctly.

I disconnected both HDMI connections from the monitors and swapped them i.e. leaving the connections into the mini in place and just swapping the HDMI 'ends' of the cables between the two monitors.

Now, the mini boots correctly with both monitors attached. I don't know why that worked - but it was my experience.

So, interesting... I have seen the USB-C to HDMI adapter screen go off each time I have logged off even after doing the Big Sur reload, then starting in disk start up options and re running Big Sur... every time after the re load of the re running of the OS, I get the screens, then I either shut down or allow it to go to sleep, and the USB-C to HDMI does not work. HDMI to HDMI works, always has. Well... interesting tonight. I walked away to cook, watch Blacklist, and eat, and the HDMI to HDMI went into the koosh ball screen saver. By the time I came over, both my monitors were in sleep mode. I moved my mouse to wake up Mac mini... and I am typing as I writer on the USB-C to HDMI monitor and the HDMI to HDMI monitor is on and working. I know when I close this down tonight, it will not work, but this is just odd. I do not want a computer I can't consistently rely on the displays working. This is beyond frustrating.

Meaning, advertised that their own products don't work. There should be a solution when you call Apple Care as well.. they want to replace my unit. At first they wanted me to send it in or go to the store... heck no... I just got it last night. Should have waited, I want to be able to use this out of the box, not have to sink another $300 into accessories. I get that we have to buy a mouse, and keyboard, but then something else to run dual displays. I don't have to do this with my MacBook Pro.

I won't be restoring from backup, I'll just reinstall all my apps fresh again. Please do let us know how it goes with the replacement Mini. I have a nagging suspicion that these are software problems and not hardware problems. If the problem persists on your new mini, I'm going to cancel my order and just deal with the Mini I have.

*fingers crossed*

Dude, those instructions are a little too hard for me. Run a ruby script to create an override file? Can some one just tell me what to copy and paste into terminal? Someone needs to create some easy to read instructions that even a musician could understand. (I'm a musician).

Give me some easy instructions of what to paste into terminal I can do it! I'd love to try it!!!

thx

I'm having this same exact issue, as well as some other issues that others have mentioned in my research. Mostly pink artifacts, mostly first few minutes of startup. Once my Spotlight searches stopped working, and another time I had to reboot for USB to work.

The consistent issue though, has been this dual monitor issue, which matches the OP's description to a "T".
