Mac Mini (M1) dual display doesn't work.

I'm enjoying my Mac mini with the M1 soc but unfortunately connecting two monitors does not work. Upon fresh boot, both monitors display correctly on login screen. However, when logging in, both monitors start flickering (see video). I have to disconnect and reconnect one hdmi cable for displays to work again. I currently have one one monitor connected through the HDMI port; the second monitor is connected with a USB-C to HDMI adapter. I should clarify that both monitors work perfectly on their own; the issues come when both are connected. Any ideas?

I've liked a video of flickering. The apps are non-responsive when flickering is occurring.

OK this is more of a specific response, mainly to anyone attempting to connect TWO Apple 30" (maybe other sizes too?) Cinema Displays to an M1 Mini. I am writing this all to document for anyone else in the hopes that they don't have to jump through all the hoops I did, also for my own reference later as the issue is not resolved!

Bought a new M1 mini (16Gb of RAM) in January; after reading SOME threads and watching a couple YT videos (like the one where the dude hooks up 6 monitors), I was confident that it would take some trials but all I had to do was figure out the right set of adapters and I'd be golden.

My monitors are the older ones, not Thunderbolt, so already were running to my 2013 Mac Pro via the expensive dual-link minidisplayport to DVI adapters. I tried this HDMI cable before my mini even came, no dice so I sent it back.

Then came the onslaught of attempted cables, some using the minidisplayport adapter and others including the Startech USB adapters that have their own GPU card.

Didn't work: this this this this and this

These 2 USB-C/Minidisplayport adapters DO work, at least in connecting ONE of the monitors:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B7FSVTL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Finally discovered Apple had an HDMI-DVI adapter, so had to try that, right? No dice, sent it back.

Then I moved to the DisplayLink software route, trying this Startech adapter as well as a single display adapter(using another adapter in the middle, which seemed to work but then would fritz out. Then it really just wouldn't work.

Oh also forget trying to sleep the computer and then hoping the displays would wake up too, I would always have to re-plug in the cords to get anything to show up. I spent time in Safe Mode, Recovery mode, tried changing the desktops (now there's this new adaptive desktop that changes sunlight throughout the day, could that be it?--eventually figured out, no that's not the issue). Note that this is pressing option while changing the resolution in Displays system prefs to toggle different things here and there, trying all kinds of combinations and forgetting which ones I'd tried and then trying them all again. Oof.

Then I read that 11.2 fixed the displays problem! Oh, the problem was actually in the OS?! I guess I had given Apple too much credit and assumed it was the adapters. So I pre-emptively rebought that Apple HDMI-DVI adapter, giddily updated, and upon hooking it up--it... didn't work.... but now I COULD get the HDMI-connected display to come on in lower-res mode, at least on startup.

I kept reading more and more, but could not get the 2 displays to come online at once, ever, for more than 5 minutes. So I finally scrapped the notion of even trying for 2, but then read this article about resetting the color calibration, so I tried it.

I had already tried creating new calibrations settings (I thought), but wth ok, I gave it a shot: and lo and behold, the 2nd display (connected via HDMI) would come on! ...so long as I left it in 1280x800. Tried a lot of other things to no avail, and FINALLY called Apple.

Got escalated, and spoke with a tech who spent some time looking through Engineering notes. Came up with the pronouncement that 2 Cinema Displays will NOT work with the M1 mini, at all. !! Wait what? I told him that I was seeing the second monitor, so long as it was in 1280x800 (or less), and it did appear stable. He said that according to Engineering the company is surprised by that. We ran through a number of alternatives most of which I had tried, but apparently the company believes I should not be seeing ANYTHING on the 2nd monitor. Welp. OK, he wrote it down, said they may call me back, and here I am, still enjoying these monitors and hoping for an 11.3 fix (not holding my breath).

So, to recap, I am using one display connected via USB-c to minidisplayport to minidisplayport-DVI adapter, and the other is Apple's HDMI-DVI adapter right to the DVI connection (with all USB 2 cables plugged in too). I sent back the DisplayLink gear after the tech I spoke with said that it was a dead-end, that anything with an external GPU was uncharted or dangerous waters in terms of the M1 chip. And I have 1 and a half working displays. (OH btw I DID try using a different monitor via an HDMI cable, it worked fine 1920x1080 so at this point I think the dual-display issue (so long as it's not 2 ACDs) is solved in the 11.2 update, at least as far as I can see with a basic TV monitor via HDMI along with the aforementioned USB-C connection to my ACD)

I'm sure I forget a whole set of attempts to fix this, but I hope this helps someone. Or Apple to fix whatever the bug is. Til then I'll limp along with my half monitor and consider buying a new one (but I LOVE these old LCD monitors! so little glare!). Good luck.

I am using Samsung Dual screen monitor. One port is HDMI to HDMI (Screen 1) and the 2nd screen is attached to macMini M1 with a USB C to Display Port. I don't get a flickering screen, but I get only the Screen 1 (HDMI to HDMI) that starts up. The screen 2 (USB C to Display Port) does not turn on. After Screen 1 comes on, I need to pull both the cables out i.e. the HDMI and the USB C out of the MAcMini, then wait for 2-4 seconds and put back the USB C to Display Port cable in, then the Screen 2 lights up, after Screen 2 lights up, then input the HDMi cable in to the MacMini - then Screen 1 come on - such a pain. I have to therefore make sure my MacMini in never sleep mode. However, when I switch off the MacMini, I have go thru the same process again. I read a blog somewhere that Apple is aware of the problem, but has not provided a solution.

Apple probably will never fix this. I've had issues with my displays on my 2012 Mac Mini and it's never been resolved. Somehow Apple is unable to do basic things that every other computer manufacturer has seemingly little issues with- support the use of external monitors... Even more sad considering Apple writes it's own operating system and uses it's own hardware, still can't get it right.

I have one 20 point touch screen hdmi>hdmi and one Samsung screen usb(display port)>usb c .

I had to stop the Samsung monitor from auto detecting the input by cycling to dedicating the usbc(DisplayPort ) as the manual fixed connection then I shut down the Mac mini and then restarted and kept my finger pressing the power button for 10 seconds and when Mini restarts to a recovery. menu shut it down . Restart it and see if both fire up. If they don’t go into login preferences and gat the Mac to auto login. Shutdown , start the Mac Mini up again and see if both monitors fire up. That worked for me after installing 11.2

i have a Mac Mini 2018 Intel and lost the HDMI port after update to Big Sur. I have tried every available Big Sur release including developer. I wouldn't count on downloading a beta resolving the issue for Intel Mac Mini 2018. People report wonderful things happening with betas that may not be confirmable. For me, even with 3 displays down to 2 Big Sur is a more stable improvement over Catalina. There are always various Recovery mode options to reinstall the last OS that worked with a particular setup and this could be the most elegant solution.

I saw a tip on MacRumors that worked for my issue above--I reset SMC to reset power supply issues. Shut down my Mac Mini 2018, pressed the start button for 10 seconds (chime) and released. Then, after a pause, I pressed start again to restart the Mac Mini and my Mac recognized the third display (Samsung 4K tv) on the HDMI port. Could be resetting SMC will help with other issues people are having after updates to Big Sur.

Just updated to Big Sur 11.3 on my Mac mini M1, still only one monitor works. Even worse, only works via USB-C port to mini-display adapter. The HDMI port no longer works (with my adapters no idea with an HDMI monitor..). It seems dual display support is never happening from Apple on these things, real shame. Probably return the mini for the new iMac and see if I can get a second display powered from it.

Hi--imo there are two problems for your Mac Mini M1. 1) yes the HDMI doesn't work. I have a Mac Mini 2018 and the HDMI doesn't work with Big Sur; but 2) even though I think your T3 ports have separate controllers your M1 only supports 1 display off the Thunderbolt ports ("One display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt and one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0") So only 1 display if the HDMI drops out. My Mac Mini 2018 has 4 Thunderbolt ports, 2 to a controller, so I can display two monitors--I do have dual display support (though I'm supposed to have 3 including the HDMI). I would think the Mac Mini 2021 Intel (with 4 Thunderbolt ports) also can display two displays even if the HDMI goes with Big Sur. The Mac Mini 2021 Silicon M1 with today's Big Sur...not good!

The Mac mini M1 does support two monitors but seems to have issues with adaptors or long leads. My Mac mini m1 works fine. I have 2 benq monitors running without issue. HDMI to hdmi on one and I connect the other monitor with mini display cable to the back of an owc thunderbay 4.

The thunderbay 4 is connected to the Mac Mini via thunderbolt and holds four drives.

Plug in the hdmi screen only and reboot then use the usb-c to usbc(display port n monitor) and plug it in…. If it does not spark into life then shutdown Mini… press and hold in power button until the maintenance boot starts , shutdown then restart , that fixed it for me, I have a 27 touch screen as hdmi to hdmi and a Samsung 49 extra wide screen for the usb-c to usb-c (display port set as connection on monitor)

I suspect that there are a lot of bad cables out there, as so many people seem to have trouble linking the M1 Mac Mini to two monitors. Mine is successfully driving three monitors in a flight simulator. The details are as follows: X-Plane 11.53r1 on a 16 GB M1 Mac Mini (494 GB storage) connected to (a) Dell model 2007 FPS monitor (1600 x 1200 @ 60 Hz via VGA on monitor to VGA/DVI-I adapter to Startech.com USB 3.0 Dual Head Graphics Adapter to USB-C on Mac Mini), and (b) to a Westinghouse TV model LDD2240 (1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz via HDMI to HDMI), and (c) to a Flatron W2252TQ (VGA on monitor to Belkin VGA/Thunderbolt adapter to Thunderbolt on Mac Mini).  Startech’s DisplayLink driver was loaded and activated. OS is Big Sur 11.3. Logitech Saitek Yoke, Power Quadrant, Rudder Pedals, and Radio Stack. Flight Velocity elevator trim.

Well this is irritating. I got my replacement Mac Mini yesterday so this is day 1 using it. I walked away for a bit and when I came back and unlocked my computer- I noticed nothing was open on my right monitor. That's because Mac OS moved everything to the primary monitor. So unless there's a way to fix this, every time I come up I have to move the windows back to where I want them?

You've got to be kidding me, Apple...

Mac Mini (M1) dual display doesn't work.
