MacBook Pro 16 doesn't recognise external monitor

I bought a MacBook Pro 16 two days ago to upgrade from my previous MacBook.

I had been using a secondary external monitor with the assistance of a Thunderbolt cable (VGA to Thunderbolt) and working at all times.

This new model requires an adaptor from Apple (Thunderbolt to USB-C) which I bought as well. However, the monitor says "No VGA signal" and it does not seem to recognise the external monitor.

I have tried plugging and unplugging the cable as well as the machine to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated. The external monitor is key to allowing me to work on a daily basis.

Kind regards,

D
