I just installed Apple CarPlay (limcet box) in my car and it only works when plugging in the cable. The cable charges the phone as well. How do I set it so that the cable doesn’t charge the phone? I don’t like short term charging as it reduces the life of the battery.

Whoever gave you that advice was wrong. There is no reason to not plug it in and let it charge while you're using CarPlay. None whatsoever.

Thanks for the replies. I guess what I’m saying is that if my battery is between 20 and 100%, I don’t want it to charge just a little while it’s plugged in. I’ve been told that you shouldn’t charge in between those numbers in order to keep the battery at best performance. So if I’m at 65% and when I get out it is at 75% it changes the recognized charging pattern. I may not be saying this correctly.

Don't worry about it; the operating system's "Optimized Battery Charging" feature will do the right thing as far as maximizing your battery health.

Wired CarPlay is the norm.
Wireless CarPlay is actually still somewhat rare.
