M1 Mac mini display issue

I received my M1 Mac mini on Tuesday and didn't experience any problem until today. Turned it on and noticed some small pink squares moving around my monitor. They would change position as I opened a folder or right clicked on something. After changing the stock wallpaper they disappeared. I also switch my HDMI cable just because, but I've been using this HDMI cable with other devices with no problem what so ever. Hoping it's not a hardware issue as this is a brand new unit. Has anyone dealt with similar problems?

After another week with this problem I have discovered that the issue completely resolves (for me at least) when I move the Mac Mini a meter away from all peripherals (monitor and bluetooth keyboard & mouse). Could this be a proximity interference issue? The pink artefacts at boot-up and during the login screen have completely vanished after this 'experiment'.

Sounds like pot luck, but no pink squares for me since unticking the mission control "displays have separate spaces" option as suggested earlier.

Have a minor issue though with my display coming back on with different settings. One time it booted with a 720p res (panel is 1080), then on multiple occasions it's booted into 60Hz mode with the 120Hz and 144Hz options missing until a screen off/on cycle.

I've also seen the desktop wallpaper reset itself post-reboot on multiple occasions.

I’m also tried reinstall Big Sur and you know what, after I used function erase my Mac and boot automatically to the recovery screen I seen this pink artifacts immediately what can tell me what this is not a Big Sur problem it’s looks like a HW issue the best way to explain it what it’s not SW it’s try to turn it off manually using a power button I can’t believe what this pink screen before shut down is normal. And first what I wanna do when I come to the Genius Bar ask them let me see another Mac mini and try to shut it down right away and if I’ll see ping screen on that machine also I’ll will keep listening all explains from the apple worker and keep write the true here until they will solve this issue.

11.1 is out. For me it's a 3.27GB update. The release notes mention nothing about this particular issue, which is unfortunate. However, it still could be fixed in the update. Sadly, we may all update and see an improvement but not know if it's resolved entirely or not- since Apple isn't claiming it's resolved. :(

This release also addresses the following issues:

  • QuickTime Player might quit when opening a movie with a timecode track after upgrading from macOS Catalina
  • Bluetooth connection status was not displayed in Control Center
  • Reliability of unlocking your Mac automatically with your Apple Watch
  • Trackpad scrolling speed may be faster than expected on MacBook Pro models
  • LG UltraFine 5K Display may incorrectly display at 4K resolution on Macs with M1

I got my Mini for couple of days now. And I had noticed the same issue from the thread yesterday. It looks like this is a common problem of the Mini. I reached out to the apple support online and did few troubleshooting. I tried the options given by testing the screen on recovery mode, logging in different accounts, and deleting login items. After restarting the mini the said issue was corrected. Until this morning when I powered on the mini again, wholla! The pink pixel flickering on the screen came back! Then I checked the storage management. I did the optimization of the storage. Restarted the mini and then again the symptom disappeared. Hopefully this will fix the issue. Ill be back! 🤞🏼

I had the same issue on my 2018 mini and when I got a m1 mini it started happening here too. Suspect it's an OS issue. Seems to happen more often on the m1 though. Pink squares only last for maybe 2-3 minutes each time then go away. Anytime I have the issue it goes away on its own, doesn't appear to need any action except patience to wait the short time before it stops on its own. Hoping they figure out and fix it, just glad it doesn't last long for me.

I spoke to them as well. I’m sure they are tracking this very actively. I am also pretty sure this is a software issue. Just saw a thread (can’t find it now) from Elarson6772 where he was in the beta program (and it was not working), dropped out and went to 11.1 (not beta) and all was well. He inadvertently upgraded to beta 11.2 and it broke again. I was going to ask if he could downgrade again to 11.1 but lost the thread. Anyway, between talking to senior tech support and his thread, I think I’ll sit tight and wait for my replacement. My guess is that they’ll have a fix soon. If not, I can afford the wait.

I also have this issue on my M1 Mini, noticed it after first login after unboxing. Im pretty sure this is a software bug, because it happens only after a new boot and it goes away very quickly. Does happen on hdmi, on usb-c to hdmi cable, usb-c to usb-hdmi hub, with different type and length of cables and many of us have the same problem, so i dont think so all computers are having this problem... You can think Im crazy but look at the your screenshot, what do these flashing things look like? Its like a big cursor in terminal :)

FWIW, I just bought another Mini M1 today for the household. It's got the pink squares. They go away. They don't come back until reboot, and even then not always. Just like my other one. It continues to be not even a little bit serious. If this was 30 years ago when I was building PCs, I'd whine about "crappy drivers on this $19 VGA card" and try to find newer drivers. If it persisted after the login, I'd care more. It doesn't. I don't. I now have four M1 computers, and they're all working great, and the minis have a few pink blocks on the login screen. * shrug *

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned a possibility that the Mini does some interpolation on the screen size that the laptops do differently or don't have to do at all because of native resolutions. I'm not sure it's THE issue, but I do think it's a decent lead to look after if people still care about this problem.
