Why is my system using 440gb on MacBook pro?

I cannot figure out why so much space is being used by systems. I have deleted photos, music, etc. Restarted in safe mode, deleted Safari cache. Still taking up huge amount of space. Can I safely delete computer cache? I'm nervous. Any other ideas?

System includes:

  • Time Machine local snapshots, but are marked as 'purgeable' and should not be removed manually.
    • However, if you wish to do so, use the following commands in the Terminal app:
      • To get a list of current snapshots: sudo tmutil listlocalsnapshots /
      • To delete individual snapshots: tmutil deletelocalsnapshots <enter the snapshot>
  • Spotlight Indexing
  • iCloud Storage of infrequently-used files.

In this case, rebuilding the Spotlight Index may reduce the amount of "System" space being used on your notebook.

Do you use Time Machine on your notebook for backups? If so, are these backups going to an externally attached drive or to a network drive, like the Time Capsule? Regardless, if you are using Time Machine and the backup drive is not available, it will create local Time Machine snapshots on your notebook. These would contribute to the System space used and why I mentioned it.

Thank you for your response. I am a very novice user and I am unsure what I will be deleting if I purge. What will rebuilding Spotlight index do? I have moved things to iCloud and I have followed all directions about how to free up space. Deleted all duplicate pictures, moved them to iCloud, deleted documents and downloads.... it didn't seem to make a difference. Why is the system usage so large?

Thank you
