External Display USB-c Monitor issue

I have a MacBook Air M1 (base model) and a LG 27QN880-B 27” QHD connected via USB-c. I keep my MacBook Air open because I use it as a Secondary screen and the LG (primary).

The issue (2) is that when I wake up the MacBook Air from sleep the monitor doesn't turn on. I have to unplug and plug again the USBc to turn on (sometimes I have to do it multiple times). Second issue, the performance seems to be a bit choppy and sometimes laggy (cursor seems to skip sometimes) with the external display connected.

This used to not happen before (MacBook Pro Intel Mid-2018), I would imagine with the M1, things would run smoother... but it's otherwise.. worries me a bit...

To let you know, I used "time machine" and restored my MacBook Air from the MacBook Pro content would this also cause issues as I'm seeing?

Thank you All!

Update: I exchanged my MacBook Air M1 for a new one... after all the troubleshooting and no solution.

No more issues with the external monitor anymore upon waking up the MacBook Air.

I am running BigSur 11.1

BUT I still have mouse issues.. with the mouse cursor skipping around sometimes.. I have a Logi MX Anywhere 3 (changed from the MX anywhere 2). I now use the wireless dongle and no issues.. It saddens that I cannot use bluetooth mouse.. :(

That's an important point of clarification you just called out. The cable I got is actually USB-C to HDMI. So I'm outputting from USB-C/thunderbolt on my MacBook to HDMI on my monitor. I also tried it through my dock. So that's USB-C/thunderbolt from MacBook to USB-C/thunderbolt on the dock from USB-C on the dock to HDMI on the monitor. Whew!

Nevertheless, here is the cable I purchased:

HI @jefffffff, my current setup (which stopped working with 11.2) is HDMI to DisplayPort, then DisplayPort to USB-C cable. This WAS working under 11.1. Per Apple engineers, DisplayPort is NOT supported whatsoever, so I don't think the cables will work. However, please do report back. The more evidence we can gather, the better. I wish you the best of luck!

For reference, these are the cables I had that stopped working:

DisplayPort to USB-C cable:

@snoop088, in principle I agree with you. However, my monitor only has USB-C and Thunderbolt cables, It does not have an HDMI or DVI port, like most other monitors do. That is my main problem at this point. Others have other issues that prevent their setup from working, and most likely it is due to bugs in macOS. Completely agree. My particular situation is just a tad different.

I see :) I can't be much help unfortunately as I haven't played with the M1 yet.. It also sounds a little strange that a new chip doesn't support 2 external screens. After all it is quite a capable processor or so it seems.

I hope the bug when and if it is fixed (it exists for some time already and there seems to be little progress made trying to solve it) also solves this configuration with the HDMI, DP, USB-C..

Just following up on the above cables that I ordered: they do not work.

From trying various options and solutions, and what Apple engineering and support have relayed to me, the following technologies will NOT work on the HDMI output of Apple M1 Macs:

  • any DisplayPort connectors
  • any USB-C connectors

It seems the only connectors they support are DVI connectors, per their claims.

To be clear, I do agree that this is a macOS issue, and they should fix the problems people are having. It's clear that these can be fixed if they wanted to, as for my particular case everything was working fine in 11.1. Further, I don't see any solution to my particular circumstance, as there are no DVI-to-Thunderbolt adapters or HDMI-to-Thunderbolt adapters (as I would need to convert my HDMI to DVI, then to Thunderbolt for the Ultrafine 4k displays).

Its done my head in since December... I've put in a support ticket over the phone, assured that it would be escalated to engineers ... heard nothing for almost three weeks... I cant even find the transcript in my Support App ...

Continues to baffle me... I have taught myself a few work arounds, which means 10 minutes of f**&ing around every morning to get the screens to work...

Its the worst form I've ever experienced in almost 20 years of loyal Apple/Mac usage..

I'm sure heads will roll... & I'm sure this will be fixed with the next update ... if not IDK!!!!!????? FFS!!!!

So, after reading some of the above comments, I gave it a try on a MacBook Pro 16" with AMD 5300 and 16GB RAM. I took an SSD, installed BigSur 11.2.1 on it, transferred my user with the migration assistant. Plugged in my BenQ SW271 (a 27" 4k professional screen) with the USB-C cable that came with the monitor, no hubs, no adapters - directly to the monitor... and what do you know - SAME OLD ****. Display is recognised as 1080p screen. :) just FYI.

Now I see that 11.2.2 is available. Installing.. but to be honest chances are slim, seeing how this is not fixed after few months.

ridiculous engineering and customer care.

I agree. Apple used to sell LG monitors, and now their OS won't even wake them up. Shame Apple. What you did with iTunes also. Shame. You're forcing subscription paths, or iCloud upgrades. I can't even use Text edit without iCloud warnings. Shame where they are going. The Apple garden is getting much smaller and is leading me to the exit path after 28 years Mac IICI my first.

I have a similar problem. Just purchased both a new M1 MacBook Pro and a 34" LG widescreen 4k monitor. I constantly have to unplug and re-attach the thunderbolt cable for the monitor to recognize the M1 MacBook. Second I would think that the MacBook should detect when the Monitor is turned on and power up MacBook. In this day and age that's not asking to much of the current technology.

Is there anyone from Apple reading this thread?!

I have a Dell U2719DC 2560x1440 that used to work fine when connected to my Macbook 12" 2015 until I upgraded to MacOS Sur. I use a DELL PC for work which has no issue with the USB-c port...

Pattern connecting:

  • Usb-c connection to Dell Monitor with my laptop screen open = [X] Forces 2048 x 1080
  • Usb-c connection to Dell Monitor with my laptop screen close = [OK] Dell monitor is 2560x1440!! This just worked as I was typing this line...
  • Usb-c to Apple extension port to HMDI - [OK] Dell monitor is 2560x1440 but I lose all the USB features such as having my Dell sound bar connected or using my external usb keyboard.
