Airpods not connecting to iphone 11

I just purchased airpods and I cannot get them to connect on my iphone11. I open the airpod case and follow thee screen prompts - it shows them as charged and I hit done. However, on my iphone it says not connected and states to "forget device and try again". I have tried multiple times without success. Suggestions?

AirPod won’t conmect I disconnected my AirPods to connect to my phone then after about an hour I did the same but backwards (disconnected airpods from Mac and connected to phone) but the airpods weren’t connecting to my phone so I forgot the device and tried connecting again and it didn’t work then I reset the airpods and it still won’t connect its first gen airpods on IPhone 6s Plus
