4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

i think the best, and only solution to this, is for folks that have the issue to submit FEEDBACK via BIG Sur Feedback app.....as this info will go back directly to the programmers, and they have to act on it. Seems all other channels of communication with Apple, including this one, don't seem to have much effect.

If enough feedback swamps them about this issue, it should raise up the priority list. Doesn't matter if this is hardware or software issue, it will start to get to the right places for investigation, at least some action.

And like others I have tried every solution mentioned throughout the thread....nothing works!!!!

Worked with AppleCare today but got no answers. They were just on a log collection expedition. They have no idea as to what may be causing this. Their diagnostic tools are almost impossibly cumbersome in that you need to execute them within 5 seconds of the issue. Now remember your mouse and keyboard have dropped and now they want you to somehow use your non-connected keyboard and mouse to collect data within that 5 second window. good luck with that

Also confirming that today's 11.1 update did not fix the bluetooth issues w my Mini M1.

  • Magic Trackpad2 and keychron k1 keyboard. Both work with two other non Big Sur Macs (MacBook Pro, Mac Mini 2015)
  • I have tried the bluetooth module resets, disabling wifi with no success

Support update - yesterday I did go thought the support process and have a case # with a senior support specialist. No resolution obviously but did capture data from my Mini to provide to the engineering teams and anticipate a response within a couple days one way or the other.

It took some time to work through their process however do recommend those of us having this issue to submit your data as well. Maybe we can get a fix soon. Good luck!

I'm thinking this is a Mac OS issue not hardware. I have a MacBook Pro M1 with a Logitech MX Master 3 for Mac (bluetooth) and have the random mouse disconnects in Mac OS. However, I also have NVIDIA GeForce Now gaming app with "Direct mouse input" enabled and I can play for hours with no mouse glitches. Any explanation for that? The minute I exit back to Mac OS I start to have the drop outs. (literally just had a drop out typing this)

Like others here, I have also been contacted by Apple’s support engineers, who are monitoring this forum. We are now forwarding analysis files to them after each bluetooth disconnection occurrence.

One piece of very useful information they offered was that they are no longer recommending the deletion of plist files, as this can cause additional problems due to the links between these throughout the Library folder.

The easiest way to reproduce for me is Airdrop. The moment I open my iPad (2020, 12.9) to Airdrop something over from my Mini to the iPad (like a PDF) my Bluetooth connections on the Mini all get terminated. Only way to wake them up is to plug in my Magic Trackpad 2 and then manually reconnect the Keyboard (2009 Magic Keyboard).

On waking up the Mini it takes almost a minute for me to be able to type my password. Which I have to do since I can't get Apple Watch unlock to work at all. It always says "signal too weak" even if the watch is almost touching the Mini.

I was supposed to have a follow-up on a ticket with Apple Engineering today, but they haven't replied yet so the call has been rescheduled to Monday.

Over the past few days, I've been using my mini much more heavily, and now I see the problem is much worse in terms of frequency. Under heavy use (about 8-12 hrs/day) I see the mouse drop off about once an hour. A few times, it has dropped off twice within 5-10 minutes, but they are usually spaced an hour or so apart. The typical experience is:

Mouse disconnects

2-3 seconds after mouse reconnects

mouse disconnects again

3-5 seconds later mouse reconnects

I have a Apple Magic Trackpad connected and neither it nor my bluetooth keyboard were impacted. This would make you think its the mouse, but I tested the mouse on my 2019 MacBook Pro and had no issues at all for 2 weeks.

So I tested the Beta Big Sur on my MBP 13" intel and had the bluetooth problems with my magic mouse 2. Reported this to apple through the feedback system they have for beta testers. When Big Sur got released I thought for a moment it was solved but it did not. I recently switch to a MBP 13" M1 and it is hopeless again at least 3-4 times a day the mouse disconnects - connects after clicking and moving the mouse - disconnects and connects again to repeat the whole circus after 1-2 hours.

I also use my MBP for trading and it is very frustrating not to be bale to use my mouse when you need to react quick sometimes.

I am seeing BT issues with a gen 1 Apple keyboard and trackpad, and with Logitech MX Keys and MX Master 3 mouse. It really does look like a software issue.

They will work fine, then on a sporadic basis the BT will lag (to the point of making the Mac mini unusable), I will get the spinning rainbow wheel, and then it will go back to normal.

Nothing else changes in my office. So either software, or one of my other Apple devices (phone or iPad) suddenly interfere with the mini, causing the issue.

I'm having extensive difficulties with Bluetooth involving a Magic Keyboard 2, a Magic Trackboard 2, and a Bluetooth 4 speaker. I've had interference from WiFi, which I cannot keep turned off, and I've had difficulty with a USB 3 hard drive plugged into the USV A connector interfering with the Bluetooth. I've had my USB C monitor turn black, requiring a restart, to work again.

There is something going on that is seriously affecting our ability to use our new Macs, and because it's after the 14 day return window, I am reluctant to send my Mac back to Apple for repair or replacement. There is no evidence that another machine would resolve the issue.

I certainly hope Apple is working on this, as I don't have access to the developer or Beta tester portals to report this issue and don't have any other recourse except to take my Mac to Apple for repair or replacement.

Ive got #3 and #4 here on a new M1 mini 8/512, with a Aura 2 bt and wired speaker, a powered USB lighting port hub with 7 switches on that, one filled with an external SATA SSD. The other lightning port on the M1 has an NMVe enclosure and 512 SSD chip. Everything works great but the BT. The range is a joke.

Ps. that monitor problem sure is strange. My 4k monitor looks different as well, worse than it did on an MBP. The app scaling is all messed up.

Another variant of the Bluetooth issue with Mac Mini M1, 16GB, 1TB SSD running Big Sur 11.1 Apple Thunderbolt display connected via Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapter.

No major BT issues since new for at least 2 weeks of flawless operation. Then new iPad Pro 12 inch arrives. Installed on desk next to M1. Set up Sidecar. Screen sliding worked perfectly for about two days.

Then BT dropouts start happening when iPad is awoken from sleep. Zero ability to start M1. Zero ability to control M1. Have to plug in old USB mouse and keyboard.

iPad goes back to sleep. BT reconnects.

Frustrating...

I connected all devices (keyboard, mouse, trackpad, headset) the same way as before, ie via the Apple Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences. If I hold the option-key and click on the bluetooth icon in the menu bar I see version "8.0.2f9 (v14 C4096)".

Please also read my addendum above (explaining I had to turn off FileVault).
