4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

Mac mini, macOS 11.0

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

I was fortunate enough a few years back to win one of the 8086K anniversary processors in the give away intel conducted and built a system around it. I don't expect systems to be perfect.. god knows windows is far from it. However, in all of my self built windows systems, I've never faced these specific types of issues unless hardware flat out failed. I immersed myself in the apple ecosystem a few years back and had an imac etc.. however, went back to windows because of work compatibility stuff. Would like to migrate back to mac. Time will tell.

I have noticed that my Mac mini M1 Bluetooth connection drops every time (?) that I receive a notification on my iPhone. I then have to turn off and on again my Bluetooth connected Sony WH-H900N headset and write a letter or two to re-initialise the connection to my Magic keyboard 1 and tap/move my finger on my Magic Trackpad 2 to do the same.

I also often have to use a cabled USB keyboard initially when returning to my Mac to get the Bluetooth keyboard working. The Trackpad doesn't need the same treatment. I have turned off hibernation when the monitor is turned off, so the Mac is in effect "always-on".

In addition I have small "micro dropouts" from time to time where the sound skip and the keyboard and/or Trackpad looses connection for a second or two but automatically reconnects.

Just curious, but does Apple's Support Team typically post on these forums? We are now on Page 5 of continuous reports from people about these Bluetooth issues. 162 people (and counting) have said they have the same problems. Is it safe to assume that many/most(?) M1 Macs have these issues?

Apples Bluetooth Engineering team contacted me via email for add'l details, and it sounds like a few others have mentioned being contacted as well.

However, I'm waiting to hear an update from Apple on where things stand. Anything would help!

A) Has Apple been able to reproduce these issues?

B) Has Apple identified the cause of the issues?

C) Does Apple have any suggestions on how to reduce (or eliminate) the problems? Any work arounds?

D) And finally, is there an ETA on a fix? What's the plan of attack?

Appreciate any add'l info. Thanks!

I too have had random restarts but the thing that frustrates me the most is Safari stops loading a page and freezes up on various web sites. It is so bad that I have switched to using Opera. None of the other browsers exhibit this behavior (Chrome, Opera or Firefox). Apple needs to address and fix these issues.

It appears to be related to how it attempts to block some content and trackers. However, unchecking the block content on this site does not fix the issue.

What is the unifying receiver? Sorry I am unfamiliar with that term. By the way I think I cured the Safari hanging on some page loads by adding the extension ABP add blocker extension.

The unifying receiver is what is used on most Logitech keyboards & mice. I was able to resolve my issue but switching the devices off bluetooth to the unifying receiver.

Unfortunately, booting into Safe Mode seemed to have resolved my issue for about a week, but today both my trackpad and keyboard failed to wake the Mac mini from sleep. I ended up plugging them in with a lightning cable and rebooting the machine. Bluetooth connections seem stable now after rebooting, but appears to degrade over time until eventually failing to connect at all.

Getting a replacement is good but fist of all Apple has to ship you a new Mac mini first before they get your old Mac mini back (otherwise you will have no macs to use)

Second, can Apple promise that replacing your Mac with a new Mac mini can solve the Bluetooth problem? I wonder the problem is doing something with its hardware and software together. If it is true, a new Mac will have the same problem.

I started using my M1 Mac mini with the unifying receiver and no Bluetooth devices. The stuttering of the mouse was insane, I switched back and forth between several Logitech models I own—they were all terrible. Ironically, I ended up buying a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse thinking that would fix the problem! LOL! Now the Big Sur update today seems to have made my new Magic Mouse even worse.

Agree with you. There are far too many issues for what they charge. One of the main reasons I pay premium for Apple products is the high quality and service and that is clearly missing in this case. I am considering returning my purchases back. Most frustrating to deal with mouse issues. It is particularly bad that their own products don’t interoprate!

I do have an original Magic Trackpad; same bluetooth issues. I have a Magic Trackpad 2 ordered, but I seriously think I'm just going to return everything and build my own Intel NUC. At least I know I can have a machine that works. Won't be as fast, but it WILL be reliable. Apple doesn't seem to understand that some of their customers don't have the time to troubleshoot products, we do have to work. Whatever happened to "You don't need a manual, it just works". The M1 Mac Mini doesn't "just work".
