MacBook Pro M1 2020 Printer Problems

MacBook Pro M1 2020 Printer Problems

I have two printers. A Canon Pixma Pro 9000MK2 photo printer and an HP Laserjet P1102W.

Neither of these printer will work with my new MacBook. I have tried every combination of USB cables, hubs, adaptors to run through the USB C ports on the new MacBook. The machine recognises the printers on adding in Printer preferences but goes into fault when I send a document either printer. I have removed and added multiple times and reset the printer system all to no avail.

Is anyone else having issues the same as these. These printers worked faultlessly on My MacBook Air 2014 running Catalina. Is the issue Big Sur I don't know what to do next.

Can anyone help. Thank you.

I was able to find the HP Color LaserJet MFP M277dw printer in the "Library" under "Printers". I right clicked and "get info" and checked the "Open using Rosetta" box and that actually fixed it to where it works as it did on my intel MacBook Pro before I migrated to the M1 MacBook Air,

Simple fix that I found here on the discussion forum. the even more interesting thing is that I have never seen that option available on the other intel apps that are running via rosetta. Only on this printers Get info!

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro M1 with an HP Ink Tank 310 (USB printer). I solved this problem by these steps:

  1. System Preference
  2. Printers and Scanners
  3. Add printer (connected by USB) (the + sign)
  4. Choose the printer

-Choose your printer

-Click Use

-Choose Select Software (I think this is the most important part of choosing the Kind of printer. I chose the Generic PCL Printer before and it did not work.)

-I didn't found my printer type but I choose something similar and it worked. I didn't even install any HP drivers.

Hope this helps

I have a Canon Pro 9000 and downloaded the available driver for Mavericks 10.9. There are no listed drivers for later OS versions. It installed successfully on my Macbook Pro M1, running Big Sur 11.1

I was able to successfully print off a test page after adding the Canon Printer via USB.

I was not confident that an old OS driver would be accepted but I'm glad to see that this worked out. Hope it works out for you.

I had this problem with M1 MacBook Air with an AirPrint attached HP MFP 277dw. I could print but not scan. Printer would open but not show up on the Dock and when select Scan nothing would happen.

used "option key" while selecting "go" on the finder menu up top and selecting"library". Scrolling to Printers then HP 277dw. Then Get info. Select "open with Rosetta" then close out and close printer and reopen. Wala all works.

Someone needs to fix this. HP is a common printer.

Apple does not produce printer drivers, they pass through drivers supplied by printer manufacturers. AirPrint is a standard protocol that printer manufacturers can develop to and doesn't require drivers to operate; printing via USB can be different.

Unfortunately if Canon decided not to support their printers on newer Apple hardware or on a new version of macOS, there is nothing Apple can do about that and it's a shame Canon decided to abandon their customers.

Please keep that in mind when selecting a printer in the future.

In the meantime, please let Apple support know of this issue directly.

For USB to fail in this manner when printing to multiple brands of printers, it sounds either like a bug in Rosetta 2 when handling Intel printer drivers that use USB or a general issue in the M1 USB code, and the more reports they receive the more likely it is that engineering will look into the issue.

Update - HP Laserjet Pro P1102w

I was able to get the wifi configured on my printer and with the wifi option I can print from my new M1 Air. Still doesn't work on USB, but as long as I can print I am good.

For those having the same issue, I had to update Firmware on the printer, update the drivers on an older MacBook (the latest drivers would not install on M1 Air). Once I did both I was able to configure the wifi via a USB connection to the old MacBook Pro.

Once the printer was configured for Wifi I was able to connect to it from the Air using the HP Smart app from the AppStore.

Hope this helps anyone. Im happy to not have to go get another printer.

Peace!

Buy a new USB type C cable!!!

So I bought a MacBook Pro M1 in November, I tried to use my old canon ip27001 series printer with the existing USB type B connector. I received a 'USB class' error. I went onto Amazon and purchased a USB type C connector to USB 2.0 for the printer, and it worked perfectly. The adapter didn't work for me.

I have since spoken to Canon in some detail about this issue. It's really very simple. Canon have not and will not produce any drivers for Big Sur 11.0.1 for the printer I have, they have said to me the list of printers that require new drivers is almost endless and they will no longer support them. They have agreed to escalate a complaint I have registered time will tell !!! I am guessing HP are at the same game - ie dump your printer and buy a flashy new one. No I don't think so.

Very annoyed.

I had a chat with Apple and the Senior Advisor concluded that I should ask Canon to upgrade the printer drivers. Assuming he correctly isolated the problem, Apple really messed up.

I own one of the most popular all-in-one printers on the market, Imageclass MF247dw. It's only 2.5 years old and worked fine until I upgraded from MacOS 11.1 to MacOS 11.1 on an M1 yesterday.

While Apple provides a library of printer drivers, it appears to disavow responsibility for them. A reasonable person would have read the ads and assumed that Apple had taken steps to ensure that the drivers were backward compatible over this short time period (the same Big Sur OS 11.1, same driver, Rosetta translation, etc.).

But they apparently didn't think it was worth their time to verify that, say, the top 50 home printer models' drivers would survive the migration. They instead blame the problem on the printer makers.
