MacBook Pro M1 2020 Printer Problems

MacBook Pro M1 2020 Printer Problems

I have two printers. A Canon Pixma Pro 9000MK2 photo printer and an HP Laserjet P1102W.

Neither of these printer will work with my new MacBook. I have tried every combination of USB cables, hubs, adaptors to run through the USB C ports on the new MacBook. The machine recognises the printers on adding in Printer preferences but goes into fault when I send a document either printer. I have removed and added multiple times and reset the printer system all to no avail.

Is anyone else having issues the same as these. These printers worked faultlessly on My MacBook Air 2014 running Catalina. Is the issue Big Sur I don't know what to do next.

Can anyone help. Thank you.

For the HP printer try installing the drivers posted by Apple last Friday: HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for macOS Dec 11, 2020

For the Epson printer see if the Epson site has a driver for Big Sur for download.

Hi,

I found this printer driver @ SourceForge that made my USB only printer come alive!

Search for gutenprint-5.3.3 for Mac - install, make sure all old drivers have been removed and add the printer

with "software" drop down box to select Gutenprint...

Now gutenprint-5.3.3 is for Mojave only at this stage, don't panic - it installed on my M1 (with Rosetta 2 help I assume).

Good luck!! Rob

Update - HP Laserjet Pro P1102w

I was able to get the wifi configured on my printer and with the wifi option I can print from my new M1 Air. Still doesn't work on USB, but as long as I can print I am good.

For those having the same issue, I had to update Firmware on the printer, update the drivers on an older MacBook (the latest drivers would not install on M1 Air). Once I did both I was able to configure the wifi via a USB connection to the old MacBook Pro.

Once the printer was configured for Wifi I was able to connect to it from the Air using the HP Smart app from the AppStore.

Hope this helps anyone. Im happy to not have to go get another printer.

Peace!

OK. First I was using AirPrint and NOT USB. In my case pinter actually worked but I could not see the print queue or scanner. Traced the issue to a programming problem on HP part. HP actually had an M1 driver but it obviously did not work. To Fix in my case.

(1) In the finder goto the "go" menu item

(2) Hold down the option key

(3) Select "Library"

(4) Go to the "Printers" folder

(5) Find the driver for the HP printer you are using

(6) Right click (option click) and select "Get Info" from the menu

(7) From the get info dialog check the box "Open using Rosetta"

As I have said previously I have two printers. A Canon Pixma Pro 9000MK2 photo printer and an HP LaserJet Pro P1102W.

No here is the really weird thing. On the 24th December I was trying yet again to get them to work.

So hard to believe after everything I had tried and failed the Canon printer suddenly started working.

Working completely - the full works, the full printer dialogue etc. etc..

Now I say it is weird because I have definitely not installed any OS updates, or tried any other printer drivers.

So to make it clear I am running a MacBook Pro M1 2020. The OS updated a couple of weeks ago when OS 11.1 installed about two weeks ago.

So I cant explain what has a changed. The HP LaserJet Pro P1102W still does not work.

I am read somewhere that the M1 and OS11 does background updates, I think could this explain the situation.

Needless to say I am happy that I have got an expensive printer working again.

Can anyone out there shed some light on this weird situation. M

HP LaserJet Pro P1102W.

So here we go again. How does it have to come to this.

I have now got my HP LaserJet P1102W working - fully - all bells and whistles.

So how did I do it.

I have an older PC running Windows 7.

I downloaded the latest wireless install HP software/driver bundle and Firmware from the HP Support

Site for this printer and Windows.

In fairness to HP this software installed easily and seamlessly through the PC on my network although I did

have to initially connect the printer through USB to the PC.

Wireless printing works with the full and comprehensive settings pages etc. with this installation on the PC

but more importantly on my MacBook Pro M1 2020 Big Sur but also with my wife's MacBook Air 2014 Big Sur

with guess what AirPrint.

I find this staggering.

How many M1 2020 Mac's have been sold to date where people are struggling with printer set-ups

and taking.

So come on Apple put together a help page to help people resolve this and not have to resort to what I have been through

or even worse forced to buy a new printer/printers. M.

Very annoyed.

I had a chat with Apple and the Senior Advisor concluded that I should ask Canon to upgrade the printer drivers. Assuming he correctly isolated the problem, Apple really messed up.

I own one of the most popular all-in-one printers on the market, Imageclass MF247dw. It's only 2.5 years old and worked fine until I upgraded from MacOS 11.1 to MacOS 11.1 on an M1 yesterday.

While Apple provides a library of printer drivers, it appears to disavow responsibility for them. A reasonable person would have read the ads and assumed that Apple had taken steps to ensure that the drivers were backward compatible over this short time period (the same Big Sur OS 11.1, same driver, Rosetta translation, etc.).

But they apparently didn't think it was worth their time to verify that, say, the top 50 home printer models' drivers would survive the migration. They instead blame the problem on the printer makers.

Apple isn't responsible for third party software or hardware, the third parties are.

Ultimately if Canon decides not to support M1 owners, those people will think poorly of Canon, not Apple.

Apple doesn't write or develop printer drivers, they simply pass on what vendors supply them with and are quite clear about that.

If you want to blame Apple, that's fine, but it's simply not their fault.

Not for nothing, but Canon had months to test their products with both Big Sur and M1 Macs prior to release and quite apparently, didn't care to.

It's not Apple's responsibility to make sure 3rd party hardware will be compatible with their new system. They put out a beta version of the system nearly a year before introducing to the public so developers could update their equipment, software and drivers.

All Apple is able to provide are drivers given to them by the manufacturers. So blame the developers for not getting compatible drivers to the pubic in a timely manner.

William I understand the point you are making.

However, it must be incumbent when Apple does a major OS upgrade for them to point out to all the

loyal customers that there are likely to be printer driver issues. Don't let it come as a surprise.

If you look at just how many people are having issues with printers it is a no brainer that Apple should do that.

Apple does test printers and existing on OS updates I know that, a senior Apple Help Advisor told me that fact.

Or is Apple using us all to debug OS11 - I know what I think.

I have talked to Apple Support for hours until I solved the problems with two printers myself,

no help from Apple no help from HP. But solved the issue with my HP printer on a workaround.

What I still cant figure out in my mind, although I don't really understand how MacBooks and OS 11 work

is where the issues lie. Is it a USB printer driver issue, or is there something more i.e. is it an M1 Chip issue, is it OS11.

I never and I mean ever had an issue with previous MacBooks and OS10 until I bought the MacBook M1 2020 and OS11.

Best regards - M

I disagree.

Apple has long held the philosophy that they simply pass on what vendors give them, and if they don't work, you need to contact the vendor.

Apple neither has the time nor ability to test all third party devices for compatibility - they're not going to buy one of each Canon or HP printer.

It's unclear what, precisely, is to blame for some printers not working with M1 Macs, especially as they use AirPrint which is a standard that shouldn't require drivers - but once again, it depends on how their printer configuration software is written.
