Safari not opening "upload file" pop up window

When I try to upload a file to a website, Safari won't open the pop up window to allow me to browse my documents and select the file. I do get the Select file window (as in the screenshot) but then nothing happens when I click on it. This is with all websites not just this one (overleaf.com). Other browsers work. I have de-activated the ad blocker extensions (or any other extension) but it does not make a difference. Pretty annoying. Used to work fine but has stopped functioning since a couple of weeks. Any idea? Running macOS 10.14.6 and Safari Version 14.0.1 (14610.2.11.51.10)

Hi again mario and joseph - an update reply from me.

I've been having same problem (loading photos up to Ebay)

I've read many of the threads concerning this, and have worked through suggestions.

IT IS NOT A MOJAVE issue as such...following advice above I reloaded Mojave 10.14.6... upload worked fine (using the installed Safari 12.1.2)

IT IS NOT A SECURITY UPDATE issue...following reload of Mojave and Safari 12.1.2, I then in sequence loaded the 2 security updates 2020-005 and 2020-006....again no problem upload worked.

IT IS NOT A MOJAVE SUPPLEMENT ISSUE...... I then added the macOS Mojave Supplemental Update....this introduced Safari 14.0....again no problem uploads continued to work.

IT IS....IT IS....a SAFARI 14.0.1 ISSUE....so finally I added the Safari 14.10.1 update... lo and behold uploads stopped working.

So I have no solution, but my workaround keeps me on Safari 14.0 and therefore functional, 14.0.1 clearly doesn't work with Mojave, and maybe not with Catalina (according to some posts).

Hope this helps... I've logged with Apple Support.

Hello mariofromnewtown,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like pop-ups are blocked on Safari on your Mac although they are enabled on your settings. We'd be happy to look into this with you.

This is fixed in the forthcoming Safari 14.0.3 update which is currently in beta and only available from Apple's Developer downloads if you have access to that.

Hi Joseph, thanks for your reply. I looked into this but still cannot upload files through Safari.

I attach a screenshot of my Safari preferences and extensions. The website where I am trying to upload files to is Overleaf.com, but I had the same problem with other websites.

Hi Joseph, I have similar problem to mario, I can't upload photos to Ebay.

I saw your reply here, and tried all versions of allowing and blocking pop ups, this hasn't solved my problem.

I do note that there are many many similar issues around uploading files to outlook, gmail, craigs list etc etc.

Most of these are Safari 14.0.1 and mojave 10.14.6

For me this has just happened in last couple of weeks, and maybe not coincidentally in this time I've been diligent in updating all software, and adding security updates.

I think a bug has been introduced. Can you check?

It would seem, after finding a ton of similar reports in the Safari threads, that Mojave 10.14.6 and Safari 14.0.1 and Safari 14.0.2 both introduced a bug that only drag and drop works but not any type of upload button.

Hello Joseph,

Thanks for your advice, all have been tried and the issue still exists.

Can you Please let us know when this will be resolved as it is not ideal or efficient for all users to download a competing web browser to use on a macbook pro...

Can you let us know if this has been resolved?

Regards,

Zac

Just updated my Safari from 14.0.0 to the latest 14.0.2 and now getting this issue on Campaign Monitor, when I try to upload a file into the email, nothing appears when you click the "Browse" button.

So annoying that I've had to switch to Google Chrome to build my HTML emails, which works fine by the way. I'd rather not use Chrome unless I absolutely have to, but this bug has forced me down that route. Wish I could downgrade Safari back to 14.0.0 but I suspect a selective Time Machine restore of just Safari won't work as Safari is too integrated into the OS?

Apple, if you're reading this, please fix this annoying bug in the next Safari update!!
