I have been using Apple mail for years on MacBook Pro, (mid 2015) recently am not able to send mail using Apple mail. Error is reported as:
Connection to the outgoing server, "stmp.gmail.com" failed. Set up additional Outgoing Server in "Settings.Accounts & Passwords".
Adding info for additional server via Yahoo allows me to send mail out.

How can I correct this situation?

If that doesn't help, the easiest way to fix it might be to delete the account from System Preferences > Internet Accounts. Then, add it again using that same Preference pane. Those instructions are provided in Set up Mail with email accounts - Apple Support.
Will doing this delete email I have saved?
No; to my knowledge Google Mail retains all your email messages on their servers forever, so when you add the account again Mail will repopulate its contents.
