My Apple Mail client won't connect my email accounts (mac.com or gmail.com) to receive or send mail. I am using the latest Catalina 10.15.6 OS. I receive a Connection Failed error message.

Did you change their passwords lately?
Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.
Hmm, none getting through!???
Open Network Utility>Ping tab & ping...
smtp.gmail.com
What do you get?
The free Malwarebytes may take care of it...

Sorry, in my Utilities folder I find only Disk Utility; i.e. no Network Utility among the files listed.
In Systems Preference, when going to Network, don't find it there either. Obviously, I'm not that accomplished in this kind of problem solving.
Same with me except Catalina 10.15.7
I have four email accounts and suddenly all show error message on this laptop. All accounts are working fine
on my iPhone. User names and passwords have not be changed.
I have the same problem. Some email is coming in, but I'm unable to send any.
Hmmm, Network Utility has been in OSX since the beginning!?
Try Spotlight search for it.
Well this can be done in Terminal. paste this in , hit enter...
ping smtp.gmail.com -c 10
