iPhone 12/Pro/Pro Max Leather case patina not developing compared to previous leather cases

Hi,

Anyone out there with the new leather case for iPhone 12 series notice that the feel of the new leather case seems somewhat different compared to previous cases (e.g 11/XS/X)?

The finish feels more synthetic, not sure if it's because of any surface coating.

I'm using a saddle brown case myself for my 12 Pro Max and it's the first time that there is absolutely no signs of patina on the case after a week of use, looks as good as new and this baffles me.

It definitely wasn't like that on my previous saddle brown cases, wondering if anyone is experiencing the same on their leather cases especially saddle brown ones.

noticed similar comments to macrumors forums as well:

if it doesn't develop similar patina to previous cases, it would be very disappointing.

or perhaps someone from Apple can comment on this too.

Thanks in advance!

That’s actually a good suggestion so I actually took it up with the Apple store. They said many complaints have been coming precisely with the same issue as a matter of fact the Store sales person confidentially informed me that he to experienced the same problem and is purchasing a different brand of case. Unfortunately he said they cannot accept a return of the case and it was manufactured differently not defective. Meaning this year they no longer use the high quality Tanned Coach style leather. They used a cheap hard leather and painted it with a cheap paint finish that rubs off after only a short period of time. This process is not a true “tanning process“ it’s just a “spray on tan“ and only gets worse over time it doesn’t get aged with a beautiful patina. Now for those of you that like the rubbed off paint look finish as “vintage“ I gather you would like this style. Personally I’d like to see them bring back the high-quality truly “tanned process” leather case. Here are some photos of the original high-quality case. No that’s a true patina aged Tanned saddle brown look! Please Bring it back

It’s quite a simple explanation. They now use garbage. Hopefully someone will expose them. It’s quite frustrating. The pictures speak for themself. Every single person with this case has the exact same issue. They use cheap quality and now paint a cheap finish on instead of a high-quality refined leather. There’s not too much more to explain. It’s Just a shame that they haven’t been called out on it yet.

OMG. garbage! No question Apple cheaped out. This is not fine saddle leather that ages w/time. This is a brown painted piece of garbage leather that fades&washes out at minimal use. Might as well describe it as “fine rich corinthian leather” Ricardo Montalban did well w/that! Please! Apple-bring back the original cases these are garbage! And don’t try and explain yourself … well we needed to revise because of the new iPhone 12… Well the design is more effective… Well the Materials we now use are more environmentally safe… Please! Who are you kidding…save it for the tree huggers & give me my Coach like soft, supple , rugged, real saddle leather case back. Just admit you screwed up and bring back the original leather quality cases!

I have an orange leather case for my iphone 12.

After just a couple of months the edges turned black, it’s clear that is a low quality leather. I take very good care of my phone, so fustrating. Here is Australia I paid $80.

After lodging a complain report and spending many hours on the phone with Apple custumer service I was told that the state of my case was “normal” wear and tear. I am very disaponted with the company. They are making a mistake on prioritizing profit over custumer satisfaction. At that price I woyuld expect far higher quality.

I’ve only had the new one for a month. I’m sure it will do the same thing, but my logic is it won’t look as bad as the saddle brown which just looks dirty on the edges vs a patina. I’ve had previous saddle brown cases for iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max and they all developed an awesome patina. Hope apple fixes this or I will start looking at other brands for a leather case.
